    Q9450 - too cold?!?!

    Hi All,

Built my new PC this week - Q9450 on Asus Rampage Formula -

BIOS reports CPU temp as about 10degrees C!? (Reports mobo at a normal sounding 35ish)

    Is this normal?

update your BIOS, that should sort the problem, if not post back.

to flash the bios on ASUS boards you can do it in windows using the asus updater

Which while not guaranteed, stands a reasonable chance of borking the BIOS! Flashing the BIOS is potentially the riskiest thing you can do - if it goes wrong you are stuffed!

Safest way is to read the instructions on the Asus website, and download the flash program and run that from a floppy disk. It is DOS based, so far less stuff happening in the computer, and far less risk of anything going wrong. Print out the instructions so you can refer to them easily. (If your system doesn't habve a floppy, you might be able to run it from a USB flash drive - if you can't do that, you can either risk it from windows - or live with it - are you really bothered about the CPU temp, unless you are overclocking? )

In the unlikely event that the flash doesn't go well (you will get an error message) DO NOT SHUT DOWN - try reflashing again. It is a good idea to download the BIOS from the chip before you start to the same floppy disk, so if it fails again, you can try re-flashing with the old BIOS image.

Not wishing to be a scare monger, but there have been several tales of woe with bad flashes - all related to flashing from within windows. (There wuill now be a deluge of posts saying that it went K for the posters - it may well have done - but we are talking about your system - do you want to risk it?)

in windows if your flash fails you can re flash again

Dunno about DOS mode but if thats your only PC you'll have to find another pc with internet and re download the file. Also the new mobos have crash free bioses don't they?

Yes - you can in in DOS - but sods law says that you get a BSOD just after a bad flash - and have to rebbot - but it won't. The Windows updater is unreliable. Why risk it? (I am talking about real DOS here - run at boot time - not the Windows command prompt - which is pseudo DOS.)

No he doesn't - his computer is working - all he has to do is download the file and the stand alone flash utility (it might be on the support CD that came with the mobo) and reflash from the basic (This is real DOS - not the pseudo dos window)

The BIOS may be crash free - but we aren't talking about the BIOS code - its the BIOS uploading and re-flashing code and if that crashes half way through the flash, or fails to flash correctly - the computer wil not reboot.

Safer, but still not as safe as booting from the ASUS utility and flashing from that - no wndows code at all to muck things up!

    Re: Q9450 - too cold?!?!

crash free as in if you fubar a flash if you put the driver cd in and do a certain procedure it will reflash to the bios set on the cd. I think thats how it goes. Usually on ASUS boards though.

Better yet, use the motherboard's flashing tool within CMOS setup.

I tried EZ Flash and it never pick up any of my flash drives.
The easiest way I found is to burn a UBCD and another CDRW with the BIOS file & AFUDOS in it. I just boot off the CDROM into DOS and start flashing. I literally spent hours trying to get the **** EZ Flash working but it didn't.

Not just that, there is NOT a floppy connector on all the new motherboards.
Perhaps motherboard makers should include DOS in the BIOS chip :S
