Steam Bug?

If I right click on Portal, then on Properties, then the Local Files tab, and click Verify integrity of game cache, Steam eats all 4GB of my system memory and doesn't release it again, even if I close the program. I have to restart my system to get my memory back or my system runs very slowly. Is this a known bug? Does it happen to anyone else?

Thanks. BTW, it also doesn't release memory from a game until I close Steam, i.e. with Portal open, memory rises to 35% but when I close it it stays at 35% unless I close Steam. Is it caching Portal so it opens faster or something?

Hmm that is wierd. Perhaps is an Operating System bug, does it happen with any other applications? Have you tried using different memory sticks?

Edit: I've just Googled for this bug, looks like I'm not the only one: http://www.sharkyforums.com/showthread.php?t=254249 but that was posted a few years ago...

BTW, test it for yourself if you have Vista by adding that resource meter to your sidebar - note what it's at before / during / after running the game and after closing Steam.

Anyone having trouble signing into steamcommunity.com ? I type my details then it says incorrect login and I type them again, same result then one of those 'type the characters in the picture' things appears.

Another question - I've heard that there are some 'mods' for Steam games that are in fact trojans or keyloggers - is Portal Prelude http://www.portalprelude.com/ safe, and what about 'The Flash Version Map Pack' http://portalmaps.wecreatestuff.com/ and, assuming Prelude is safe, can anyone recommend a mirror, as the ones I've tried so far are very slow...
