Windows 7 BSOD on Startup

My PC got stuck this morning during POST while checking memory frequency, it would hang before reporting the operating frequency of the memory. My system has been stable for the last year and i have not made any hardware changes to it what so ever. (Installed Windows 7 RC when it was released, it has been stable since)

I went into the BIOS and reset everything to default, same problem. If i press a key while it's trying to determine my memory frequency it will skip to loading windows. Windows 7 starts to load and 2 seconds later will BSOD. Every time.

I'm a little puzzled by this as you can imagine. Windows 7 has been very stable and i have not received any BSOD's before this morning. Almost like something has gone kaput overnight.

I will swap the memory out and see if that helps, otherwise i guess it might be the PSU. Does anyone have any other suggestions for what i might try? Thanks.

P.S I was looking forward to a nice relaxing Sunday away from computers and now this, it's almost like they know isn't it!!

Sounds like a memory problem but you sig does say Q6600 @ 3Ghz. Did you return the bus speed to stock as well or just the RAM ?

yes returned all settings to factory.

Do you have another comp to download and burn memtest?

I'm running memtest now, i have tried each dimm individually in the pc, but it restarts as soon as win 7 starts to load. I have also had ubuntu running from the disc (in memory) and not had any issues with that. I'm starting to think its the win 7 installation that's corrupt. I will post back with memtest results.

Pass complete, no errors. I will attempt to repair the Win7 installation, otherwise i guess i need to re-install. Doesn't explain how it got stuck during post though.

Up and running again after a fresh windows 7 install. Still not sure what caused it. Miffed that it occupied so much of my sunday but not harm done thankfully everything was backup up.

I've had a few BSODs with Windows 7 RC, I think it's just because it's technically still in testing so I wouldn't worry about it. Like you said, just keep everything backed up.

During Windows 7 startup, sometimes blue screen will appear. This usually happens due to incorrect installation of any hardware or software. Most of the problems are caused due to incorrect software installation. It conflicts with other programs and create BSOD errors. One way to get rid of such issues is boot into safe mode and uninstall the conflicted software. Still if you cannot get rid of that, you may run system restore. This will restore your computer to an earlier date before installing that software.
