    Problem With XP

    Hi all,
I was using XP normally when I received a message that I had a virus. I told AVG to deal with it and then moved on. Later my computer automatically restarted, the problem was, that as soon as the computer started loading Windows XP it would restart again causing a restart loop. I reinstalled Xp on a different partition, and am using that one currently. How would I go about fixing the original windows xp installation?
    Thanks

    what service pack is installed?

    sound like the blaster worm

just type in blaster worm in google and download the cure for it

oh and i would restore it to a previous restore point through safe mode first:

Not even safe mode works...could it still be the blaster worm? Is there any cure I can administer through this OS?

Do you have access to the corrupt/infected partition?

can't you just scan for virus' through the working partition, as a last resort you could always copy all your stuff from the previous install onto the new partition and clean the other partition

Yeah I can access the partition fine, and all my files are anyway located on a secondary partition. I did a virus scan and healed all viruses. I just think that maybe AVG or something deleted a Windows file (unlikely) or that I downloaded something that did. Is there anyway I can reinstall Windows on that partition without having to reinstall all the programmes?

If there's a way you can get access to the problem partition give ESET's online scanner a go.

    heres what to do:

insert your windows xp cd and make sure the bios is set to boot from cd/dvd

and make sure you run off the corrupted partition

restart your pc so that it boots up the xp installer

from there you get the option to install a fresh copy of xp or repair an existing install

select to repair the install and it will install the original xp files from the cd but you will not lose any data or installed apps.

please note: if your xp install is service pack 3 then the cd you use to repair install should be service pack 3 also

when you insert the xp disk and boot from it you should get the option to install xp, select this option.

then it will find an already installed partition of xp

it should then give you the option to repair install that partition

probably you will understand this better:

    Re: Problem With XP

Thanks, but I found out what the problem was. I had a virus which infected some Windows .exe's so I deleted them accidentally using AVG. Anyway, I reformatted and now everything is fine...

Though does anyone know how to get rid of the "virut" virus? It seems to have infected a hard drive where I keep a few exe's.
