    Repairing Telephone Line?

    My friends just moved into a rented property, that has never had a phone line activated.

    He obviously wanted the internet, so has jumped through hoops to get this organised. Yesterday was activation but the router doesn't connect, upon investigation this might be the reason;

    in the picture, the cables at the left of the image are the extension, the cables to the right are BT.

    It looks like during the refurb of the property not much love and affection was given to the join from BT to internal extension.

    Would I be right to suggest simply removing that joiner (what's the official name?) and just connecting the wires?

    Orange to Orange (Ring wire? Not even needed anymore?)
    Green to Green
    Dark to Dark
    White to White

    My friend is adamant that the extension doesn't appear to have a white, but I reckon it could just be dirty.

    I'm probably going to pop round tonight to splice the wires, but can anyone confirm I'd be right to do this?

    I suggested fitting a master socket on the end of the BT line and then plugging the extension into the new socket, which might be the way forward as a permanent solution, but we just want to test the connection before spending money.

    Re: Repairing Telephone Line?

    If that's definitely the demarkation point where BT's wires enter the property, be aware that you'd be breaking the law fitting a new NTE5 master socket, and can be liable for prosecution or fines levied by BT. Bear that in mind.

    I would perhaps advise your friend to contact both his landlord and his phone provider (BT or otherwise) to arrange getting it sorted by Openreach, and seeing if the landlord will meet the costs if Openreach decide to charge.

    IT should be free for BT to come out and fit an NTE5 especially if the property doesnt have one already fitted.

    I thought it was something ridiculous like £120 for an engineer to come out and fit a socket?

    Nope IF you havent got an NTE5 BT should fit one for free.

    IF you alredy have an NTE5 then the charge is 160 if memory serves.
