    Plusnet line regrades

I got an e-mail from Plusnet telling me that my ADSL line for Plusnet has been regraded to BT IPstream Max. This could allow me to get up to 8Mbps downstream. I rebooted my router and it showed a downstream link of around 5.2Mbps in the router diagnostics screen. I then ran a speedtest (from ADSLguide) and it still showed a 2Mbps ADSL line speed!

I guess my line is being throttled at 2Mbps at Plusnet. Did anyone else get their line regraded?

Not yet but apparently its coming in at the next billing date according to their website...which will be 22nd April (ie Saturday).

Got an email saying this on 16th March....

    Free broadband product upgrades!
    ================================

I'm delighted to announce that from 30th March 2006 we'll be upgrading our Broadband Premier, Plus and Pay As You Go customers for free.

    The main changes are:

    - Up to 8Mb speed upgrades! (subject to availability).
    - Addition of PlusTalk minutes on our broadband phone (VoIP) service.*
    - New usage allowances and traffic management.

If you have broadband, there’s no upgrade fee or change to subscription and you will not be asked to begin a new 12 month contract. You don’t even need to change any settings – we’re doing everything for you!

Your product will be upgraded on your first billing date after 30th March 2006. If you pay annually, this will be the same day in the month as your annual subscription, e.g. the 15th. Speed upgrades will follow over the coming months - see below.

Customers on other products (products no longer sold) will be upgraded separately and we'll be contacting you by email if this applies to you.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

What speed did you sign up for before the suposed upgrade?

there's a few threads on the Plusnet forums about this happening Taz. First one I found was http://portal.plus.net/central/forum...ic.php?t=41300

    Hope that helps!

Yeah my line is getting upgraded to 8mb soon, but I read in the gaming forum something about BT lines being stuck at 2mb even though they are 8mb (I don't fully remember why).

Basically once you get upgraded there's a 10 day "bedding in" period whereby BT take measurements to see what the maximum speed your line will handle while maintaining a stable connection. After that point you should see the speed increase to a reasonably stable speed. Mine should take about 6.5Mb/s when it gets done, though that probably won't be for a while yet.

My experience, albeit through Zen, is that if your router/modem is connected and synch'ed at the point where BT move you onto ADSL MAX is that you will (probably synch) much higher (in my case at 8128) but be stuck at the previous line speed.

After 2-3 days, I found my speed gradually increasing, initially to around 4.5Mbps. The speed tests are not very accurate, as it takes a little while for your download to ramp up in speed, by which time the test is over. I found the best thing to do is use a download monitor (I use netpersec, good luck finding it on the net now though ) and download several linux ISO's at once from www.mirror.ac.uk. I find my speed maxing out at around 7.2Mbps. If I use a single ISO, I tend to find my speed capped at about 4Mbps, which suggests the server is limiting the speed.

If after the first 3 days you are still stuck at 2Mbps, it may be worth talking to Plusnet, although it may be that BT will take no action until after the 10 day bedding in period is over.

    Hope this helps,
    Cheers,
    Stephen

These links hopefully explain everything you wanted to know about the MAX speed increases.

My billing date is on the 9th too, but I got the email about it after the 9th, so it's obviously going to happen in May.

I did find one way of getting a quick upgrade in speed. I asked for my MAC code and moved to Zen. 24 hours later I was on ADSL Max

    Cheers,
    Stephen

what a load of tosh, no way could you have phoned up plusnet today (thursday) then have zen hook you up within 24 hours.. iirc its atleast 7-10 days and with adslmax upgrades being done left/right/center expect even further delays
