    Audio: Need background noise removed!

Have a problem chaps. Have some footage of people talking. At the time the background noise wasn't too bad but after capturing the footage and playing it back it's awful. Most of the speaking is inaudable because of the volume of background noise.

And before anyone says it, googled it, tried audacity & cool edit pro but all i get is a garbled, almost digital sounding speech.

    Any ideas?

£10 in your paypal if you can fix it! In a pickle!

    Cheers peeps!!!!!!

Re: Audio: Need background noise removed!

Really simple process. You can even do it these days with Audacity.

Simply fire it up, and highlight a portion where there's only background noise. Click the 'train' button or similar on the application. Play it back and you'll find that the program is now applying a inverted copy, cancelling out the noise.

It's not perfect but usually gives good results. It's possible to do better, but you need serious tools then. Izotope RX is amazing, it'll remove virtually all noise and not leave that much behind in the way of audible artifacts. If you're still struggling to hear stuff PM me and I'll run it through RX.

Ouch, that's seriously bad. Hope you can get something from what I've done.

Glad it's sorted Mark. Feel the love for circuitmonkey.

    Interesting Lowe, Izotope RX.

I do use their Ozone suite, and quite like it as part of my mastering process. Is RX a bit tough to get really good? Your post suggests it might be. I don't often need something like that but when I do it ain't normally a breeze lol.

Re: Audio: Need background noise removed!

If you understand spectral graphs it's a simple tool. Best description is Photoshop airbrush for audio. Takes a little getting in to but once you understand it's limitations and best use, it's amazing.

    <hijack>

Any ideas if the same can be done to remove excess bass from something (concert footage taken with a digicam with no control over recording volume)?

Re: Audio: Need background noise removed!

Yes you can do this in audacity.
Rather than train it on a bit of background noise, you can manually define a frequency dependant filter to suite

That's not noise reduction, that's just basic EQ. If you want me to take a look let me know.

I'll give it a bash in Audacity and if nothing happens I'll upload a sample Lowe - thanks

Thanks for that Lowe. I've noted the name as a fellow muso and purveyor of fine sounds

I currently use the Wave suite of NR tools in the Mercury bundle if I am in need of such. I'll pm you for a swap of knowledge no doubt soon as I am aware I have been stuck in a world of SONAR 7 Pro and reason 4 for some time now and have not been paying attention to more recent products.

Gotta love Hexus for it's community.

sorry I was late in on this..... but for future ref, I used to run my own recording studio and have a few good tools left over, plus 12 years worth of knowledge.
