HT not working...

I reinstaled windows and added SP2, Sisandra says

"You are using a Hyper-Threaded system on an Operating System that either does not support HT or does not support the total number of logical CPUs of the system. Thus Hyper-Threading is not properly utilised. You may as well disable it"


Task manager conferms this! And yes its enabled in bios! So what does this mean?

Could this be do to that dam SP2?

I have used CPU-Z and it says my memory is in dual chanel mode! How is this posible.... It also says my FSB is 800MHz..... If it wasnt in dual channel it should be at 533... I think.... or 400.... It must be stupid windows ****ing up!

Errrmmm, no idea what your talking about in your second post, but try looking in other places than SANDRA to see if HT is working as it should.

Mate youve got a p4C which runs stock at 800fsb, b chips are 533 and the A chips were 400.

I understand now... rofl.. Well windows refuses to use HT, Taskmanager wont show both threads, and my cpu is maxing out way too easy! looks like I need to reinstal.... This has never hapend to me before! The second logical proc dont even show up!

Look in device manager (presumably you know how to get there) and tell us which HAL you have installed - what does it say when you expand 'Computer'??

Time to reinstall Windows XP again i'm afraid. When the screen appears that says 'Press F6 to install a third party RAID driver', press F5 instead (you may have to press multiple times to be sure). Choose 'ACPI Uniprocessor PC' from the list that will soon appear, then continue with the installation as normal, problem solved.

Yep, no idea what causes it, but it's happend to me and it happens quite often. Windows just sticks on the wrong HAL, often resulting in things like no APIC 1.1/.4, ACPI, multiprocessor support, hardware monitoring and other thermal features and buttons, and incorrect memory controllers etc etc. Most cases it just buggers up ACPI, and you have to have ACPI to utilize APIC, which can cause IRQ problems.

Yes there is a way to do it using the Win XP repair mode, but in 80% of cases this method will result in a 'broken' setup. I highly recommend a reinstall.

I believe it is only the driver that is the problem, you have a single processor driver installed for some reason (you installed XP with hyperthreading disabled in the bios?), if you update that driver to a multiprocessor driver your other processor should appear after a restart.

To do this go to the "driver" tab in your screnshot above, click on the "update driver" button, select the "install from a list of specific location (advanced)" option and click next, select the "don't search i will choose a driver to install" option and click next then chose the "MPS Multiprocessor PC" driver and click next, follow it through, restart your PC and with any luck your hyperthreaded CPU will pop up in task manager.

You *may* also need to go back into the "System Properties" tab and then go to the "Advanced" tab, click on the "environment variables" button at the bottom, and in the "system variables" menu set the field "NUMBER_OF_PROCESSORS" from 1 to 2. You'll have to restart again. It should do this automatically, but it may not.

Give it a go. if it works, and i believe it should, then it will save you a reinstall. If it doesnt work, then have your XP CD at the ready
