Can't view BIOS

I'm looking for some ideas to try and solve my new build problem. This is my first build under the supervision of a friend. The problem we've come up against is that I can't view the BIOS on start up - instead of the clear blue screen, it is filled with characters and the BIOS details are barely viewable through this "fog". I rang SCAN and they suggested the graphics card is at fault so I returned it and they replaced it. When we tried the replacement same thing, however an old PCI board works on the MOBO.

As i'm now about to have my 3rd card I'm beginning to wonder if its anything I'm doing wrong. I did note that there was a power cable off the PSU marked VGA that didn't seem to fit on the MOBO anywhere.

Sorry if I'm asking somehting blatently obvious but its driving me nuts

Spec as below 420W Tagan PSU, gigabyte K8NF-9 S939 MOBO, AMD A64 3200, 128MB ASUS PCIE EN6600GT Graphics, Corsair PC3200 RAM 1GB

No tparticularly familiar with this set up, so please treat comments with caution...

Is the Graphics card plugged into the PCIe socket specificaly for a graphics card? I have just had a look at the Gigabyte card specs and it implies that one slot is specifically for Graphics.

It might be worth looking to see if there is a later BIOS version. If you can see what the bios version is using the old PCI card, then have a look at the Gigabyte site to see if there is an update. I had a (very quick) look at the Asus site - nothing much there, but it might pay to have a closer look.
