Norton Ghost.

Hello,

I am working with a network that consists of 13 machines, i want to ghost 12 of them simultaneously.

I remember using an older version of ghost (pre version 10) that had a feature called Ghost Cast, where you'd setup each machine using a diskette to be recognized by a central machine, you'd select the image you intended to send out on the central machine once all machines had been added and click image.

Does version 10 offer a feature similar to this, if not, what does?

The older versions will do it fine, no need for the newist version.

I can ghost 48 PCs with version 8 and it works fine.

What you need is called ghost server too btw.

I have a budget to purchase the latest version, here.

Am i right in saying that, i will only need to purchase one copy for a central machine and this will allow me to ghost all other machines over the network as described above?

I only use Ghost Server in a corporate environment, so dont have any experience with the Home/HO version, so cant say if it will do that many computers like the corp version does.

I can't actually find Ghost Server on the Symantec website, the only solution that seems to offer the feature set i'm after is Ghost Solution Suite.

Can i purchase Ghost Server on it's own?

I will be working with it in a corporate environment albeit a mobile corporate environment... long story.

Just a thought... but have you looked at Acronis' True Image?

IMHO Ghost died a death the day they aquired PowerQuest and simply renamed their (rubbish) product to Ghost. I bought it for the corporate environment and essentially binned it because it's so slow and frustrating. Made the switch to TI and it seems to do all that Ghost could (and more, like backing up from the recovery environment!) without any of the lethargy or hair pulling.

I've spoken to an Acronis sales rep and they should be in touch soon, i've downloaded the trial copy so i can have a go.

Do you remember pricing details, we're quite limited by budget.

Sorry I don't offhand but i don't remember paying any more than Ghost. I'm not using the server version here but i'm very happy with it. I even bought a copy for home too!

I've got a quote now, £469 for 15 clients, with maintenance (free upgrades to latest version) and 24 hour support included.

I don't think that's particularly bad...
