I personally wouldn't bother with an external DVD writer.
Get an internal one and an Easy IDE from Scna for a tenner to make it into USb 2.0, then you can plug anything IDE into it (DVD, HDD, 2.5" HSS, etc)
EDIT: Sorry, completely misread the post. Please ignore me!

i would guess so, but it depends what they are using the poort for. What you are looking for in the spec is USB Host support. this means it acts like a PC as for as the hard drive in concerned. The only other use of a USB port on a DVD player i can think of is to tunr it into an external DVD drive...and that doesn't sound very useful.
What models are you looking at specifically?
i havnt been looking at any dvd players specifically, just want one that can go from external HDD to dvd player. Any suggestions anyone??
