Windows Vista Ultimate becoming less Ultimate by the day

Users of Microsoft's Windows Vista Ultimate have been asking the same question repeatedly since the operating system launched early this year; whatever happened to those Ultimate Extras?

It's true, BitLocker is really the only 'Ultimate Extra' worth having out of the measlt handful Microsoft supplied. You feel like you've been sold something under false pretences.

Re: Windows Vista Ultimate becoming less Ultimate by the day

If someone bought Ultimate on the understanding that more was to come, then fair enough, though buying something when not knowing what is to come is questionable in my mind, but I guess if you only buy 1 Vista license, then you might as well pay the extra and cross your fingers.

Having seen some of the OS addons that MS has released in the past which you paid for (at around 20% of the price of the OS itself IIRC), I think what has been released is about as much as I was expecting - perhaps even more so in that it actually works (for me anyway).

Personally I just wanted Ultimate so that I could hook up to a domain and use Media Center on the same PC. MS then went and gave me another Ultimate license for free anyway, dammit.

Is there any non-Microsoft source that has a list of the differences between versions of Vista? I'm currently on XP Pro, probably going to be upgrading to Vista 64. I was going to go ultimate, but all versions have Aero now correct?

Your quite right, but with a few tweaks it can have aero as there plenty of guides showing how to do it, as the code is already there.

Go Home Premium. It does all you'd want it to do.

I hope with Windows Seven MS does away with this bizarre complexity (which is all political) and just sells one desktop version. I know they won't but..

Do what? It's easily as stable as XP for me - any naughties have been down to drivers, not Vista.
I wish people could actually remember Windows 2000 in it's early days

Re: Windows Vista Ultimate becoming less Ultimate by the day

You feel like you've been sold something under false pretences.
I agree that the Extras aren't good enough yet. Mainly there aren't enough - I enjoy Dreamscene for example.

However it is a tiny bit misleading to suggest Stardock without mentioning that it does cost extra and doesn't actually exist yet (Feb 2008 for all Vista versions).

Also, Vista Ultimate is not just about extras - I thought Dreamscene was a nice idea, and I can afford the system resources with this current system - but the main reasons for me were the price difference being small, and the combination of Remote Desktop and Media Centre.
