So if i'm reading this right, the basic £299 version is plain and boring, the £399 version (that happens to use linux instead of Windows) has a funky paint job and has a designer name on it.
Why is it surprising that the Windows XP version is cheaper? It is after all the basic model, not the premium stylish one.
i am less worried by the price, more by the lack of availability before 2009 when people in the US can buy it today.
i want a 1000, soon!

Plain boring XP = £299
Funky XP = £399
MIE (Linux) = £399
oh, ok.
Well the article is confusing as I read it that way about 3 times, then posted.
Pleased to have cleared that up for you Funkstar
I think their explanation translates to "We are charging the UK so much because we feel we can get away with it......don't worry though as we will be charging mainland Europe even more then the UK!"

do i understand this correctly:
we, in the UK, will be able to buy a compaq branded 1000 with XP, in mid December, that we will be able to upgrade to HD/Bluetooth/10" screen spec?
i ask because it sounds like the cheapo compaq 1000 due in december will only be the base model with 8GB flash, no bluetooth, and an 8.9" screen..................

£299 is for the base spec which, I assume, will be upgradable at a cost. I've had no communication either way on the matter from HP, but here are the choices available to US punters.
Confusingly the £299 XP model is called the Compaq 700 in Europe...
I'd just buy the XP version and download Linux for free, not that I'd even consider buying a HP netbook after reading how much more they plan on charging the UK/EU.
