I watched every season of Dexter - it was such a well acted and well written tv show. The first few seasons were the best. The ending was crap!!! But I absolutely love this show...

I finished watching 'The Stranger Things' on Netflix the other day. Did all 8 episodes in 1 sitting. Highly recommended if you're in for a spooky series.

I've been watching this comedy called UK Parliament you can get on the BBC. It's hilarious. It's a bit like the Muppets meets The West Wing, Yes Minister and with bits of House of Cards. Basically this bunch of faux-caring, hypocritical smug folk pretend fake running a country and act out debating things while really just behaving like badly behaved schoolchildren. Some of the actors are better than others, but there are some real eccentric folk in there, which must take the actors a while to master. I bet they have great fun getting into role...
Recent episodes have seen:
the MPs award themselves massive pay-rises while the public sector all have pay freezes and budget cuts;
fiddling their expenses only to have to wag their fingers at each other when the newspapers find out;
have a 'noddy-goes-to-debating' style session on whether or not to "Brexit" (leave the European Union), and then urgently undertaking a whole calamity of reshuffling from the fallout when it turns out they've stuffed the economy as a result. (I think this was a plot twist to freshen up the main actors, as some of them were getting a bit stale and predictable).
The current plot line seems to oscillate between under-funding the NHS, taking the micky out of the weather-beaten leader of the opposition (who is so extremely far-left and ridiculously untenable in his position it makes the script writing rather cliched), and trying to pretend they know what they're doing with Brexit (when really they don't have a clue).
There's also an interesting side plot that started this week where one of the people reviewing drug and prostitution laws turns out to be indulging in such activities himself. (typical TV to be so sensationalist and dramatic!)
It can be really fast paced, but rather like watching cricket there are some boring episodes too though where not much seems to happen. Stuff about debating private members' motions as to whether a review into the price of milk is needed. These are obviously just season fillers to make up the DVD. They clearly don't have enough budget left over once they get to these ones - instead most of the main actors don't even feature, with half of the set completely empty, and the script is much more basic in these too. Which is a shame. A real parliament would obviously take such matters much more seriously - but then TV has never claimed to be 100% realistic I guess.
It must be quite popular as there are various spin-offs and sister programmes:
Newsnight - where plot lines are explained in more detail via the form of journalist interviews with the actors (in character)
Question time - where ordinary members of the public (possibly acted, I can't tell) get to ask the actors (in character) questions about the shows
Sometimes there also one-off specials called Panorama, where they explain more about the underlying issues/assumptions in the plot lines in the show. These can be quite heavy going and a bit too serious for a comedy, but I guess the purest fanbase must geek-out on them enough to justify the production cost.
The odd thing is, despite being such a long-running show, I haven't found much by way of merchandise. No T-shirts and the like. Weird.
