zen in my opinion is overpriced, i like be because their service is unlimited
I don't see the problem with AOL. It's unlimited and you don't have to use the AOL software anymore - just connect to it like any other ADSL.
A vote for Be here, if you can get it its totally unlimited upto 24meg (good luck getting more than 15 though) and £1 a month less than what i was paying for Nildram. Also a vote for NOT going with nildram/pipex, never have i seen such a quality company destroyed by another. The service they provide now is quite frankly appalling and for an absolutely extortionate price.
NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Wii, GBA, DS, PSone, PS2, PSP, PS3 60gb, XBOX, XBOX 360, Master System, Game Gear, Mega Drive, Saturn, Dreamcast, PC Engine, Neo Geo CD
I have just moved away from Griffin Internet (Overpriced / Unfair FUP) to Entanet. Mainly to a reseller called adsl24 office 45.
I know many friends and family are on BE, I would highly recommend if its in your area
Hight Bandwidth= Avoid BT Wholesale products.
Only LLU companies don't complain about high bandwidth users.
As such look at ukonline, sky (who are actually the same people), or Bethere.
Be if you can get it.
after spending many days trawling around websites and forums checking out the views of the isps i reckon i will end up going with SKy now. I was going to get their tv package anyway and for what amounts to 10 quid a month for up to 16mb (im expecting about7) and unlimited dl's - i reckon its worth looking at
my exchange has been llu'ed and sky have a presence there. So gotta be worth a shot
Sky's good as long as its not for gaming, check out the skyuser forum about high latency :/ Apart from that though for an extra £10 on top of your Sky subs, you cant argue
Also they have a FUP, however theres no mention of an actual figure. Just so you know
They are not unlimited any more. On new contracts there is a download limit of 2Gb/20Gb/50Gb (for £18/£25/£35 respectively). I am on an old Zen contract with no download limits, but only half meg speed.
Where the score well is on reliable service, and static IP. They are the only domestic ISP I have heard of that will let you have a block of IP addresses, and will setup reverse DNS aliases to point back to your system. I have also heard anecdotal evidence that they are lenient and nice if you get caught downloading warez, pirate moves or the like. (though I use my unlimited bandwith for downloading linux distros & the like).
Once you factor in these things, then Zen starts to look good. If you try to get a static IP with reverse DNS from any other ISP you start to get directed to their business class service for £80/month, or they don't do it at all.
My main criticism would be the way they cap their bandwith. If you use up your monthly allocation, they block your access, and the only site that you can access is the page to buy more credits, which strikes me as holding you to ransom. If they throttled you, even if it was down to dial-up speeds, it would not feel so bad, especially if it was just for the last couple of days in the month.
Sky isnt too bad. However it depends if you get put onto a LLU or BT product for speeds / limits
Seems like with alot of people its hit and miss with good connections
Bt...
I am afraid that is TOTALLY in accuarate.
BT Internet, is a Service Provider, like Tiscali, AOL, SKY etc.
Telephones providers, BT, Tesco, Post Office, CPW etc are also Service Providers.
BT Wholesale, owns the Exchanges. BT Retail, rents out services or Copper pairs.
Openreach "A BT Group Company", looks after the copper pairs etc, on behalf of the Service Providers.
"You", are an End User. That is, you are the Service Providers Customer, the service Provider is Openreaches customer.
Due to a few Buzzwords, namely "Compliance", Equivalence" and "The Undertakings", you will not get a better or quicker response, buy choosing BT Services, over another service Provider...not for the reason you described.
They all have to report faults to Openreach and the only variable, is how quickly/reliably, a given Service Provider does that.
Openreach ADSL Special Faults Engineer...( I do other stuff too though!)
