    ADSL Modem and DSL wireless router to be used as an access point?

    Hello all,

    many apologies if this has been posted before but I could not find an exact posting to help me.

    I have recently changed from virgin/ntl to talk talk

    I want to try and use my netgear WGR614UK router with my new talk talk modem

    now, i know that it would be easier to get a new router but would rather use my exisiting one as an accesspoint only. Is this possible? I read about disabling the dhcp on the router to make it work but I cannot get it going.. I was probably doing it wrong though!

    any ideas?

    thanks in advance

    J

    what does the talk talk modem have that your netgear adsl router doesn't? that aside, what you have in mind probably wont work, you need a router that can distinguish between ports, what's going in, and what's going out of the network, most consumer 'ADSL' routers have a hardwired assumption that the ADSL port will always be the internet interface.

    thanks for the info

    the router is a dsl one, so does not work for adsl but have read on this forum that you can disable the dchp and use it as a access point for one machine wireless only...

    so i have a wired adsl modem and then a dsl wireless router..
    thanks
    John

    Correct apart from the bit about only being able to use the AP for one machine, within reason you can use it for as many machines as you like.

    ok - I'm assuming your TalkTalk modem has an ethernet output. Plug this into the uplink port on your router and follow the instructions at http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101667.asp

    Once you have this done you should set the router as DHCP server, which will hand out IP addresses to allow machines to connect to the internet through it.

    I think this is what you're trying to accomplish...

    Theoretically, though I suspect it would drop connections way before it got to that.

    By DSL I presume you mean cable? ADSL is a subset of DSL.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    It won't have, it'll be some POS USB modem which belongs in the bin.

    Ish, the 254 limit that is quoted is more a restriction on the DHCP server only dishing out to a maximum of a /24 subnet, but yeah, the AP won't support anything like that number.

    cheers all!

    thanks for all your input..

    I will give it a go tonight...

    the modem does have an ethernet connection, I was a bit sceptical at first about the kind of modem i would get from talktalk but it seems ok, will give this a go and let you all know / probrably ask more questions!

    thanks again

    John

    Blimey, that's surprising. All the freebie modems I've seen in the past have been rubbishy USB ones.
