NTL 20mbit hmmm

I have recentley received a new cable modem alledgedly capable of the 20mbit cable service that NTL are offering.

Through my own testing i have found that i max around 500/700kk per sec per stream. What this means is that if i download say 3 - 4 times simultaneously I will indeed get the 20mbit speed. But thats not what i want, i want to download through 1 stream at 2mbit/per sec (20mbit).

I have been told that this is traffic shaping or something like that. How the hell can i get round it ???

If its over HTTP / FTP, you can use a program like Flashget to open multiple connections up to the server (if it supports it, most do).

& of course the server has to be able to provide 20MB - I doubt that most can.

use a newsgroup prog like newsbin, there you can download at full speed. i used to have 4MBps cable and via connection to newsbin my download rate was 480k, a friend has the 10MBps service from Virgin and gets the 1MBps download rate

The problem is rarely one of TA->ISP limitations, it's regularly one of ISP->Internet Host. Especially when the endpoint has to ration bandwidth to multiple bandwidth hungry users.

I've recently been upgraded to 20mbit. I get ~2300K/sec regularly from popular torrents and downloads from places like Microsoft or Linux FTPs but anywhere else is usually quite a bit lower.

Also, check how much you're downloading in the evenings as I think virgin are still throttling user bandwidth if you download over a certain amount in a given period of time.

I hate the fact they get away with putting the word "unlimited" in their package advertisement.

I download a fair bit. Mainly from 100mbit ftp servers in sweden, norway, netherlands. So i should get my 20mbit speed which I pay for. Has anyone contacted them about this yet ? Surely there has to be a way around it..?

Managed to download from a 100mbit uk ftp @ 1mb/sec

another one is download a drivier from nvidia.com use the primary download site i always get 1600kbs from them and i got 16mb from sky so but then on most servers i get at least 1mb donwload speed

Most public servers wont be able to provide 2mb's download speeds, try the nvidia.com download

Downloading latest forceware from nvidia i got around 1mb/sec...

are you sure that your area has actually been upgraded to 20Mbit & that your modem is configured properly for 20Mbit?

ive just left Virgin for sky as the speed in the evening is appauling sometimes, even websites take an age.
