they usually offer better prices to long term customers who have threatened to leave - its not ripping you off at thier list prices but long term loyalty can be rewarded.

e.g. my cabel TV with NTL should cost me circa £40 a month, I pay £23.50.

Does this work ALL THE TIME? I.e has anyone ever threatened to leave, and actually have the representative turn round and say "OK sorry to hear that sir, I'll cancel your contract ASAP", lol

Yeah that's the only reason I've not done it, the last thing I want is no broadband... I'm still on 1Mb at £17.99.

they wont say no, they might try and offer you a deal thats not quite what you wanted, but the job of the retentions department is to retain customers, and if it means that they have to shave some more off the deal to keep you, they will, if you leave, they have failed and they wont meet their targets and their department will be moved to india with them in it.
