    Possible new job in IT

    Good evening guys 'n gals!

I've gone for a job in IT. I currently work as a salesman in the meat trade but seeing as I'm still quite young I've gone for a complete career change towards IT. I've always had a keen interest, building my own PC, setting up a very small network at home, messing about with software, overclocking etc. I also did a course at college that I only did 1 year of as I then went full time working in a completely different industry.

Anyway the interview went okay. I think I should have a good chance at getting it - it's network support and general hardware configuration. The money isn't amazing and will probably be taking a cut on what I earn now + quite a bit of travel. However, it's a start as they say.

Could anyone throw me some advice or give me some good further reading websites/books?

I'm quite apprehensive naturally and college feels a long time ago. I'm a logical thinker so IT stuff comes fairly naturally too me. I'm constantly helping out family, friends and colleagues with computer problems.

Also - is it natural in interviews to have complete mind blanks lol? Fortunately I think I come across as a nice person and someone easy to work with.

    Many thanks in advance guys.

its hard to say without knowing exactly what the network is like and what you will be supporting.

My advice to you if you get this job is read read read, make sure you understand everything that you work on, keep a log of everything you do in work, be that coverstations, support etc. That will cover your back.

wait until you start - see the technologies they are using and plan to use and read up and investigate them. Become a specalist in what they are using and their roadmap for the future.
    It is Inevitable.....

Re: Possible new job in IT

and don't be afraid to ask for help if you are unsure of anything, everyone has to start somewhere.

a lot of young people fall into the mindset that "oh i can do this complicated task, then spend hours reading how-to.. although it is nice if you can show them you are competent to figure it out on your own, it is far more beneficial to the company to get the job done as quickly as possible, and if that means asking for help or asking a more senior tech to show you how to do something, so be it.. if you don't ask, you don't get ;-) and asking for help shows them that you are keen to learn.. don't sit there with your hands on your head.. lol
