    Question Can only recieve 2MB????!!

    Hi,

For the past 2 years we have been on Orange BB and getting consistent reasonable speeds of 2MB. I once in the past requested we be moved up to 8MB but after a week of testing they said it would not be possible because our line was to "unreliable".

Now, There was a problem recently with that line and because its really old and made from old poles BT were not allowed to climb the poles and service the wires so they have just 3 weeks ago but in some brand spanking new lines.

I live in the country side so they are Copper and Overhead but as I said they have just been put in.

The problem is I'm still receiving 2MB and Samknows says my line can only take up to 2mb.

I live 70 meters from the Exchange ( Cressage - 01952) and I can see it from my window!

Why can I not get faster speeds?

Thanks very much in advance and here are my line specs:

    ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2272 kbps 288 kbps
Line Attenuation 8.0 db 2.5 db
Noise Margin 30.0 db 26.0 db

It's not so much the lines are the problem, it's possibly that at the moment your telephone exchange can only hamdle 2MB because as of yet it hasn't been upgraded to support a higher speed.

Well it's not that. Samknows says it was enabled on 31/03/06

    Re: Can only recieve 2MB????!!

Hmmm it might just be BT then because they did this to me last year said our line was only capable of 2 meg but all the isp's said it was capable of 8.

Might be worth badgering Orange again telling them your going to leave they might do something then.

    Re: Can only recieve 2MB????!!

I have and they say all they can do it carry out tests which BT do and then come back saying our new line is "unreliable". Also, our exchange has ADSL Max so I should be able to get more than 2 meg.

    Re: Can only recieve 2MB????!!

If your line really is unreliable, then you are probably best on a fixed 2mb connection. ADSLMax can do some screwy things and leave you with a connection that could barely be called broadband.

And at least on fixed 2mb connectiions you are more likely to get an uncapped service.

If your line really is unstable then it's a shame. The attenuation and SNR figures you posted are very, very good.

What do the line stats i posted actually mean and why would a brand new line be "Unreliable"

    Re: Can only recieve 2MB????!!

I've no idea why a new line would be unreliable. Are you having any problems with the voice portion of the line? If you are then prod BT to fix it.

As for the stats, attenuation is basically a measurement of the reduction of intensity of a signal. Attenuation is bad so the lower the better - yours looks pretty damned good.

SNR, or signal to noise ratio is just that - a ratio of the signal to the noise. The higher is the better since that implies less noise or more signal. Either way, yours is very good. As the ADSL sync rate goes up the SNR decreases. About 6dB is a good value to aim for but I've heard of people running stable lines with 3dB.

If your line were reliable then on MaxDSL you'd easily hit an 8128 sync rate which would equate to a about 7.2Mbit. If you were on ADSL2+ then you'd be looking at a sync rate of about 23Mbit or so.

Yeah, I would at least phone and query it with BT. If they say everything should be fine then give Orange another call and tell them that BT said the line should handle more and see where it goes from there.

BT won't talk to you about broadband stuff - only about voice. To get a broadband related issue looked at you need to talk to your ISP who raise a ticket with BT Wholesale.

    Re: Can only recieve 2MB????!!

Go back and query what they mean by 'unreliable ' as with figures like you have, you should be getting 8 meg provided your line is max enabled and not fixed. You will have to establish which by asking yout service provider. If max ask them to re-set your 'profile' in case it is 'stuck'. Provided there is not an 'internal fault in your premises pulling down your line and your figures do not support that then living 70 m from your exchange and with good figures your line should support the full 8 meg or near enough. I would think that either your line is fixed or if 'max' then your adsl profile needs a reset. Worth digging a little deeper in your case.

Ok guys will do, thanks very much for the help. Just one thought, could it be my exhange that is bad. Seeings as the line is good and it is ADSL Max enbabled, could it be the exchange can't handle it?

Look at the sync rates posted - they're the old 2Mbit IP stream product, no Max there.

I can't imagine that a whole Exchange could be bad, there could be a faulty DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line Access Module) that you're connected to but BT won't really be wanting to send an engineer to the Exchange to check unless you're seeing disconnections with your current ADSL line.

If you were having problems then they can either swap out the DSLAM or do a lift and shift which basically means they move the end of the copper that goes to your house onto a different port in the DSLAM.

    Re: Can only recieve 2MB????!!

Burble, Should have realised that . There may have been a fault on the line etc while they were doing the 'max' test. If new external plant has been provided it maybe worth giving 'Orange' a wee push again. If there was a d-slam flt mit 321 would probabally have been getting more trouble and they would not have done a lift and shift on the strength of a 'max 'stablisation test.

Mit 321 , It would be worth pushing this a bit more .

    Re: Can only recieve 2MB????!!

Will Do, I'll have have to ring them as when I try and change my package up on the Member Centre online it says "You are getting the fastest speed avaliable on your line [2MB]" So obisouly I'll have to try and explain to some cal centre in mumbai that I have had a new line put in and they'll proabably go on about some policy untill I threaten to leave. If you want them to do something you have to threaten them!
