best dns hosting provider (or, not best - cheapest!)

    hi guys,
my brother in law has the family domain name hosted at 1and1.co.uk, but i'm moving their email hosting to google apps (at least they've got imap support!)
unfortunately the dns at their current package level is so limited, i can't even add cname records.

who would you guys suggest for dns hosting for a .co.uk domain name that will allow transfers?
i've only ever done it with .com and .tv domains, so the normal registrars I use don't support .co.uk

    any ideas?

    cheers

    scott

I use Netcetera because they let you edit the complete zone file in plain text, which I find very handy

    I am happy with Krystal.co.uk

they are not error free - nor were 1and1 either - but Krystal are staffed by helpful, thoughtful people - who have always responded promptly and sensibly.

I don't cope well with clones following "processes"...

    lol will take a look.

i've managed to fudge it by directecting to my host, setting up a decent htaccess file, then getting the other domain allowed through powweb. so simple

it's hard to believe that any hosting company doesn't allow you to run custom dns.

Before I shoved all my domains on the company owned DNS servers I was using ZoneEdit.com and never had reason to grumble.

    Hi

I've used Sitelutions for DNS many years. Never, ever had a problem with them at all - and they're FREE too!
Reliable Web Hosting, Domain Registration, Free DNS, Free Dynamic DNS, Server Colocation and More

I use them for several domains mapped to a dynamic IP address (cable modem) and another pointing at a static IP. They allow very short TTL values (so if your dynamic IP changes there's little/no loss of service) and offer backup MX for a few dollars a year. You can update your records via http(s) so management is easily automated/scriptable. If you're interested I can post the short script I wrote for this purpose.

    Hope this helps!

    Oaf
