Virgin Media and Torrents

I only became aware of Virgin Media's new traffic management policy. I'm on the 4mb package and it used to halve it to 2mb if i went over the download limit between 4pm-12pm. Now they've updated it so that i only get 1mb if I go over the limit between 4pm-9pm. Very annoying.

virgin have completely dropped the standard of service that NTL were providing. I had no troubles with NTL, regardless of when i was downloading

NTL and VM are the same company, nothing changed except the name as far as I'm aware. I would bank a lot of money that if NTL were still known as NTL, traffic shaping would still be in effect.

I've been cheaking my speeds and they don't match the times in the web page, it's now 22:12 and i've just tested my speed at 1 meg. Should be 4

It depends on what torrent u r downloading. Not all of them will give you fast speeds. I'd be ecstatic if I got 1 to 12 kb/s on some torrents.

I've been cheacking my speeds with speedtest.net, not just on torrent speeds.
Even outside the time frame in the artical my speeds are still way down.

I've noticed my connection has been a bit crap for the past few days, I just checked with speedtest and my download is fine, a bit slower than normal but not by much. My upload has dropped to 48kbps according to speedtest, I used to get about 320kbps.
This is not just during peak times.
I will have to get in contact with them soon if it doesn't improve.

I'm on 4Mb Virgin Cable.

type your ip in your internet explorer or firefox etc and see what the problem is mainly check your firewall and DHCP. And thease problems do happen with utorrent
i now use azureus works well over 255.2kbs sec.

.. I had exactly the opposite happen - was using Azureus on VIRGINMEDIA line and all of a sudden I wasn't able to surf and run Azureus at the same time anymore. After some fiddling about i now use utorrent and all is well.

All has been fine for me with Giganews, DL at steady 2.35 mb per second

With the traffic management VM do, if you go over your limit, then you are downgraded to the lower bandwith for 5 hours or so before returning to normal full speed, so if you go ever the limit at 2059 the you will still be downgraded past the 2100 boundary. To check, dont download ANYTHING and then test your speed inside and outide the 1600-2100 frame. If you still dont have full speed (And I mean HTTP, not torrents) then you know it cant have anything to do with the traffic shaping - and then you are going to have to give then a call I'm afraid...
