Re: My internet isn't working since I move my computer around.

Small point I just had to clear up - I'm a girl, actually, lol. Probably explains why I'm so computer illiterate since girls are commonly crap with computers (in general, but not always, don't get me wrong). It's funny how people always assumes I'm a guy on every forum. I like your use of the word 'assume' Peterb, by the way, lol.

Hmm, still kind of confused about what you're asking with question 3). I wasn't joking when I said I really don't know anything about computers, wires, etc. lol. And I do have an extension, at least that's what I think it is (sorry about the uncertainty). That's what I 'moved' cos it just didn't reach the router in its new position.

Anyways, umm, I can't use MSN, I just got the info from when I clicked on troubleshooting cos it initially wouldn't log in.

And yes, I did mean what kmac said when I connected all the wires correctly . . . sorry. I don't know enough about computers to do anything complicated.

Okay, apart from part 11), is there anything else you want me to do/check? And be specific or I might misinterpret it again, lol. Oh, and my sister says she knows how to do 11), but can you go through how to get up the MSDOS, just in case?

    Thanks.

try unplugging everything else that is connected to the phone sockets (every phone socket in the house, (although if the router is showing as connected im not sure this would change anything)

to do 11) just click start-run-type cmd (then hit enter)-and then type ipconfig in the black window that pops up, then paste what it says here

Ok - so it seems the computer ISN'T connecting to the internet, so we do need the ipconfig information, then we can see if we can get you to connect to the router, which will give more information.

Worth checking TAKTAK's suggestion. Is it an extension cable or extension reel that you bought for this particular purpose?

Would be useful to know the model of the router (just rembered it was a D-Link)

Re: My internet isn't working since I move my computer around.

I may have mis- read some of the data here but as far as I can gather Mountain has not disconnected any conductors from the master socket ( so master socket must still be in original location ) just provided an extension lead with a socket on one end to the new posn ( possibly using a coupler at the master socket end ) . Now if everything was ok before the shift of the kit , then it is likely that the new extension lead is causing the problem. Would it not be a good idea to take the computer and router BACK to the Master Socket connect it all up and try the kit from there . Then if it does not work from there start an analysis if the router etc.

I thought about that, but if the indications on the router are correct, there is an ADSL link (need to know the router model number!)

Two filters - that wouldn't help - although I read from the post that there is an ADSL connection - at least to the excahange...

    good point.

mountain. have you tried using a different ethernet port if you have more than 1?

oh, and make sure that the ethernet cable is not plugged into port four on the router.

Re: My internet isn't working since I move my computer around.

    Hi
    mad this isnt it ?
ill give you a number of steps to follow and with the results we will tell exactly what is wronge.

first we will confirm connectivity to the router

Second we will confirm your IP settings needed on your PC to connect to the internet via your router

Thirdly we will confirm your routers connection to the internet

lastly we will try some fault finding checks if the above does not work

    First:
    follow steps below:
    1) check all cables are connected as discribed in user manual

    Second:
    2) log into windows and carry out the following actions
    a) open a command window by clicking START then RUN then type CMD then click run
    b) type the following into the Command window ipconfig /all
this will bring up all the IP details for all your network adaptors
    c) find the details for IP Address, Subnet mask, Default Gateway, DNS server
may look somthing like this but your IP address may be different

    Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:

    Description . . . . . . . . . . . : 802.11b/g Wireless Adapter
    Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
    Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.125
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
    DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.55
    DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.50
    Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : 01 May 2008 19:06:09
    Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : 09 May 2008 19:06:09

the KEY things here are IP Address, Subnet mast, Default Gateway, DNS Server

if you do not have a server on your home network your DNS server IP address should be the same as your Default Gateway is it ?

is the IP ADDRESS the same as the Default Gateway apart from the last number ?

if they are then we are good if not we have a problem.

    Thirdly:
before messing with your router please tell me can you access the internet on any of your other computers ?

if yes then your router is connected to the internet correctly if no then we need to log into your router and check the settings "to do this you will need the login details supplyed with your router and also your ISP login details.

please go this far and let me know the result befor we go on any more as my fingers hert with all this typeing lol.

i understand you may be going over the same thing more than once but some times you need to.

Re: My internet isn't working since I move my computer around.

Okay, I did 11) after enabling Local Area Connection and it said:
    ‘Windows IP Configuration

    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
    IP Address . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.2
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . . . . . .: 192.168.1.1’

Useful? It looks a lot shorter than The_SAN_Guy's.

The model of my D-link is ‘DSL-G624T’

It’s an extension Cable. By the way, why do you keep asking about the extension cable? It’s always worked before; I haven’t added or taken anything away. If I know why it’s important, I might be able to give you a better answer.

    And what’s DNS?

TakTak - Now that you bring up the subject of whichport the wire is plugged into, I have a vague recollection of it being port 1, but I'm not sure. Will have to check tonight. My sister has tried using the other ports, but no luck. I'll try again though, just in case.

The_SAN_Guy - the internet doesn't work on any of the other computers/laptops.

I haven’t been able to check if the internet works if I take off everything else because I got home late and didn’t really have time to do anything, let alone bring my laptop and all the little bits and bobs over to the phone socket. Plus, even if it did work, it really wouldn’t be convenient to have my laptop/desktop there.

I have a feeling I’m confusing everyone because of the way I refer to everything. I’m pretty sure I’ve changed NOTHING. Everything is set up in the exact same way the internet has always been set up. I have no extra wires left over, so everything is connected and my sister (who’s more familiar with everything) double checked.

Oh, I forgot to mention that this whole internet disconnection has happened before when I moved the computer from the same room to the same room. So basically, this is the second time it’s been moved to the current room, if that makes sense, and so basically history is repeating itself with this situation. Last time it just ‘resolved’ itself, after a few days, but for some reason I get the feeling that this time the problem is here to stay (woman’s intuition? Lol), and it rrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllyyyyyyyyy sucks having to stay at uni to get work done when I have a perfectly working laptop at home minus the internet! Plus, I don't think it's exactly normal for the internet and the computer not to connect when everything's pretty much the same.

Re: My internet isn't working since I move my computer around.

Ok - thats good! You are connecting to the router and the router is handfing out an IP address (a post code) if you like).

So the problem is either in the connection from the router to your ISP or Wondows has 'lost its configuration.

To check for the first, you need to open a browser (Internet Explorer) on the compute that is connected to the router, and type in the following:

This should bring up the interface page on the router. (The page where you configure it)

If you have lost it - this is a link to the quick configuration guide.

    ftp://ftp.dlink.co.uk/dsl_routers_mo...ig_english.pdf

which gives the basic things to check. By the way - who is your ISP?

I am tending to think that windows has 'lost' its settings - but we need to ensure that there is a connection from the router to the ISP. The fact that there are no entries for DHCP server and DNS server when you type in ipconfig /all is odd (as your computer seems to be getting an IP address - and recopgnising the router - the default gateway) which is what you need to check next (the instructions above)

Peterb, did you type something in between 'type in the following:' and 'This should bring . . . ' because I don't see anything, just looks like you pressed enter 3 times.

I think he meant to type

"192.168.1.1" without the quotes ( this is a fetaure of the forum)

Actually he did type that but on this forum if a web address doesn't have a "description tag" it comes out as blank

    Oh okay, thanks.
I tried that yesterday with the http bit because Peterb mentioned it in an earlier post, but it just said that Internet Explorer isn't working. Nothing came up. I'll have another go tonight, but I don't think it'll work.

Re: My internet isn't working since I move my computer around.

Click on the link peterB has for the configuration of the router and it describes exactly what you need to do e.g. when you type the "192.168.1.1" in a browser and hit enter it should give you a login dialogue box. In this box, type "admin" for username and "admin" for password 9assuming you havn't previoulsy chnaged the password to something else ("admin" is the default password)

You dont need access to the internet for this to work, but it has to be done on the computer that is connected by ethernet cable to the router.
