    xp to win98 network

I can't seem to get two computers to talk, even SEE eachother when directly connected via x-over cable.
I've run the wizard disk in the win98 machine to try and get them talking but still no joy...all i get when I look at the network is just one computer and neither machine can see the other.
i desparately need to transfer some very important files over to the xp machine and I'm really struggling at the mo'...esp. since my cd burner appears to crash my machine each time i try to use it!!
    please help!!

    cheers

    Got firewall active?

Have you set the IP addresses for both machines? Checked the cable? Is it the right cable? If it's a direct connection it needs to be a crossed cat5.

Sorry, tired, can't think of much else.

    1) If the cable is showing as disconnected, you've got a normal cable, NOT crossover. Either get a hub/switch or a crossover cable.

    2) Check the IP address's in use:

XP: start, run , Cmd, ipconfig /all
    98: Start, run , Winipcfg.
They should both be using Automatic Private IP adressing (169 address's) and both be in the same subnet. They should also both have the same workgroup name.

    3) Get a command prompt open on both machines. See if you can ping the IP address.

169 addresses mean that they cant get an ip address does it not? For them to network you're going to have to specify IP addresses on both machines.

if windows 98> can't locate a DHCP server it allocates itself an IP address in the private range 169.254.xxx.xxx range. This can be usefull in small workgroups as it means you've basic connectivity without a the trouble of setting up a DHCP server.

As they're simply connected together via a crossover cable, Auto assigned 169.254.xxx.xxx address would be fine - if we we're trying to share an internet connection it wouldn't (hence why ICS becomes a mini DHCP server)
