I recently bought a Billion 7300G router for what I thought was a very reasonable price of £45 (more fool me).
I wanted an ADSL modem-router combo which provided QoS features, and after seeing some reviews/awards from reputable websites regarding the quality of the onboard modem, and lots of happy customer comments, I figured I'd struck gold.
Only after installing it have I discovered the lottery that is Billion firmware updates. It seems that every version fixes 2 bugs, and creates 10 more. Some people will be ecstatic, others will be fuming.
Mine remains connected for around 5 hours before dropping the ADSL connection and reconnecting.
During heavy use (i.e. gaming), it drops out every couple of hours.
I know for a fact that the line is ok, because my 2Wire router remains rock-solid for months at a time with no issues.
Basically, from all the reading I've done, it seems like the 7300G just doesn't have the processing power to handle all of the features they've crammed into it (despite that fact I'm not using any of them), and so just falls over.
I'm considering getting one of their more expensive models, but I'm really worried that the firmware lottery will still apply to those models, and that I would regret not just going for a Linksys or Netgear after all.
Can anyone restore my confidence, or even better, suggest a superior brand/model? (other than Draytek )
