Ubuntu Install Help with Internet Connection

    Hi,

Installed 8.04 tonight on a new PC, however cannot get my internet to work.

Plugged in my modem ethernet cable and installed ubuntu.

When go into Firefox just get a server error (i.e. no Connection) the ethernet connection works when I plug it back into my Vista machine.

    Have tried using Network manager:-
    1. I tried the Auto DHCP configuration with no luck
    2. Then tried manually, entered my IP,Gateway, DNS server details etc, and still no joy.

I have Virgin Broadband, I have no router yet so straight from Modem

PLEASE HELP, I am new to this and am stuck wondering how I can get the PC online.

(P.S. Installed first time without the Ethernet cable attached, had the same problem so I re-installed with the Ethernet cable plugged in.)

Power cycle the modem after you disconnect it from the Vista PC and you should be up and running.

Re: Ubuntu Install Help with Internet Connection

The ethernet port will be turned on if it works in Vista. Maccer, Ubuntu should be very easy to get working with your internet connection, especially with a straight DHCP network (i.e. cable modem straight to the PC over ethernet).

You 'may' have messed up some settings when you were playing around, I'd suggest you set these all back to default/DHCP. As was suggested, likely the cable modem is at fault here and needs power-cycling between OSs to renew the DHCP lease.

Just turn off the cable modem, and the PC. Power on the modem again and then boot into Ubuntu. It should work first time out of the box - my brother's on VM 20 meg and Ubuntu works perfectly when I run live cds there.

Give it another go and if you're still stuck yell back

Ultra quick answers! Enabled Smart Lan in BIOS & power cycled modem it now works like a charm.

Wow love this board, so good for a Noob like me!

Sorta thinking it wasn't an Ubuntu problem when I booted the Live Cd on my Vista machine and could access internet.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH GUYS, is was stuck on this.

Not wishing to be pedantic but if Ubuntu and Vista were on the same machine and therefore the cable modem was seeing the same MAC address it wouldn't care what OS the machine was running. The OP is using 2 different machines hence the cable modem is seeing 2 different MAC addresses.

Re: Ubuntu Install Help with Internet Connection

    Just to clear thing up

Ubunutu & Vista are on different machines, I only tested the live CD on my Vista machine when I thought to see if it was something other than Ubuntu stopping connection to the internet. The Vista / Ubuntu machine had no problems connecting.

Re: Ubuntu Install Help with Internet Connection

Ah, my apologies! I thought you were dual booting - I can read, honestly! My brother had the same problem on a dual boot machine, though to be fair his modem's shot. It seems to be a common issue though, and at any rate the suggested fix worked so all's well that ends well
