    Download speeds?

This might be a stupid question but how come a 4mb/s connection doesnt download at 4mb/s? Most of the time my connection downloads at 400kB/s now iirc that does equal 4mb but how come a 8mb file doesnt take 2 seconds to download?. On microsoft website i just downloaded net framework 2.0 and at the start of the download it said 1.2mb/s then gradually fell to 560kB/s so am i just ignorant or something?.

    Thanks for any input .

    Re: Download speeds?

advertised speed is in Bits, download speed is in Bytes consequently an 8megabit connection can download at ~ 1megabyte etc

also file sizes are in bytes...

so basically divide 4 by 8 to get your approximate download speed... (8 bits in a byte) giving you around a 0.5 megabyte download

basically communications work in bits, storage works in bytes.

ah, i knew it was something simple lol. Totally missed that bit which is a shame but oh well soon to get 10mb/s so that wont be to bad.

Thanks for the quick reply .
