As I have checked and the master socket is just a normal socket inside the wall, which means I cant attach this I-plate to it.
They do if you pay for the engineer
I don't know if you can get it done for free.
You've got the old type socket most likely.

Ah well. Might give them a phone and see what the say.

My internet speed is already limited, when I tried ADSL2 up to 8mbps service my line kept constantly dropping connection, had to go back to fixed 2mb adsl which I still have now. Thought maybe the I-plate could help me out and give ADSL2 another try.

Guess not. I think if they do want to charge me I'll just get cable and have a dedicated socket installed.

I know that if your ISP send out an engineer requesting they fit an NTE5 then it`s free.

    Re: BT I-Plate Interstitial Plate

Just gonna swing it EVER so slightly off topic (and in relevance to my previous posts in this thread):

Due to the current location of the master socket and inability to set the Gateway/Router there do I run a phone extension cable from the socket to a more suitable location or do I just make things messy with power extension cable, glueing the router to the wall (so on and so forth)? This would help me determind if do still need ths I-Plate.

all the plate does is disconnect some wires...

you can do that yourself without having to shell out for a plate... (and if you need to reconnect the wires for some reason then your can...)

(infact, i think the openreach engineer actually did mine for me...)

edit: this guide: http://dslzoneuk.net/socket.php, it can improve things in some circumstances, but it won't affect anything... it is just redundant wiring

    Re: BT I-Plate Interstitial Plate

Taktak, my problem is the location of the master socket, in that it is not easy to set a router there nor power a router (the nearest power point is the other end of the hallway and the master socket is right by the front door).

The I-Plate is something I been interested in and means I don't have to faf around with the phone socket. I definitely know if I try something like that, I'd end up destroying the master socket and with it feeling the wrath of BT.

    Re: BT I-Plate Interstitial Plate

    Sleepyhead,

Without having seen your installation, from what you have said, I would run an extension cable from the master socket (using cat5) to a secondary socket located conveniently for the router. I'd leave the bell wire disconnected. If you need additional extension sockets, I'd continue with the cat 5 then check that the phones ring without the bell wire (most should).

You don't have to use cat 5 - any twisted pair cabling will do (4 core would be fin - gives the option of reusing the bellwire anyway) but cat 5 is pretty readily available (and I think BT use it for most extension cabling - and the drop witre into the house in new installations.

    Re: BT I-Plate Interstitial Plate

I know this thread is a week old now, however.... i just ordered myself a couple of these boxes of snake oil, following good ol' Trusted Reviews piece on them.
One for me, one for my mum (who has RUBBISH connections and i keep telling her to get on to BT and Pipex, but she never does.. maybe this will help?).

I'm about to move house, but i want to start my new house right, so this is going straight in.
Ordered from Broadband Buyer, who i've never used before but i know have been around a while so i'm not worried.

Whilst browsing there, and since i've been keeping an eye on Ethernet-over-power for quite a while just for those annoying dead spots in a house (even with MIMO) I got 2 of the 85Mbps jobs, total price under £70 delivered. Shame that Scan isn't doing the i-plate.
I'll post back with my own review of the i-plates in due course, although will take a few weeks to get everything in place.

I must admit I'm tempted to get one just to take it apart and see exactly what it does do!

    Re: BT I-Plate Interstitial Plate

Peterb I'll let you know, however as said it'll take a little while - i move house in about 5 weeks, and would normally go up the motorway to my mums (who seems to constantly need me to VNC into her PC, but the connection is sooooo flaky) however my life is just up in the air right now... new job, first baby, and aforementioned house.... all within around a 5 week period. Nothing like a little change in life to keep you on your toes!
