Unhappy Killed my Netgear Router DG834GT Power cut mid firmware update.

    Hi all,

I no that there is probably not much i can do about this but if any thing is possible to fix it then I’m sure I can get the answer from you smart bunch!

I was running a firmware update to the router over the network to the router and it almost got to the end of the update when it came up connection lost.

My little brother then came up the stairs saying what’s going on with the internet as the connection keeps cutting out and the lights on the router kept on flashing
and going mad. So he had the bright idea to pull out the power and plug it in.

So the power was cut just before the end of the update and now i can not connect to it by
    192.168.0.1

Router still works as a router for the network but can not access the menu or connect to the net.

I know the chances of fixing this is slim as cutting the power on any thing mid way of running a firmware update is BAD, but i thought i could find an magic answer here.

    Cheers

Re: Killed my Netgear Router DG834GT Power cut mid firmware update.

I can still get an IP address from the router but can not access the menu by 192.168.0.1

Is there a way i can force the firmware update on the router with out using the netgear menu?

Can you Telnet into it? (if it runs a server)

    reset to default?
hold reset button for 30 seconds, while holding it unplug power (turn it off) and then turn it back on, while holding reset button

What you need is the recovery utility at: http://kbserver.netgear.com/release_notes/d102417.asp

Follow the instructions and (if it isn't dead) it should get your router up and running again.

The program isn't Vista compatible thought.

u may need to hold the reset while you plug in the power lead to get it to go into "ive crapped out" mode and allow the firmware recovery to see the modem

Yeah i found this prog on the netgear site under DG834GT but only prob is that after it asks which network connection to use it displays devices and there is nothing in the list

    Start > Run > "cmd" > "telnet 192.168.0.1"

Various commands can be found in a quick Google search

    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum...fm/415945.html

If you're on Vista, you need to enable/install telnet first.

Start > Control Panel > Programs & Features > Turn Windows Features on and off > Enable Telnet Client

Re: Killed my Netgear Router DG834GT Power cut mid firmware update.

You need to read the manual for the router very carefully. The update loader is usually (not always) either in firmware or in a protected area of EPROM so even if the reflash fails (as this has) you can still upload the operating system.

There are various methods of doing this - other posters have suggested some of them - but you need to see what the default IP address of the router is under these fault conditions.

When something unexpected like this happens - best plan is to stop whatever you are doing and assess the situation and find out as much as you can - rushing in to command line and telnet commands without thinking about what you are doing can quickly make a bad situation worse - so read and research before doing anything hasty.
