Up to the master socket there is only two (active)wires coming from the street, -50v & 0v. The bell wire should be connected at the master socket. Make sure you only have one master socket as some people have fitted more than one and it will affect the line attenuation reading.
Like it has already been said, very few phones need the bell wire and even then, using a microfilter on the phone will create the ring signal for them anyway.
Diagram would help
Right. Here it is basically.

I understand it now. Thats alot of sockets!
Now what are you wanting to do? Remove the bell wire, or put a BT master socket in?
Old master sockets did not have a split face. They have a capacitor, Surge arrestor and resistor inside. Slaves have no components in them.
i got an old socket too, the thick yellow cable is from the street
the other 2 wires on 2 and 5 goes to an extension socket where everything is plugged in.
there's also a black+green wire that comes out the yellow cable which is the 2nd phone line which we used to have.
also, here's a reference that may or may not be helpful
