    Re: Terrible VM download speed

If you read the page carefully it says "percentage throttled - 75%" therefore you will be throttled BY 75% and not TO 75%.

    Hope that explains things?

    Re: Terrible VM download speed

    STM is pure evil!!!

FWIW in my experiences of regular STM they seem to do more than just cut your speed. Don't think theres anything official on it, but it struck me as port blocking or somekind of traffic shapping. eg.. When STM'd to 2.5Mb on 10Mb, torrent files would crawl along at a few kb unable to connect to peers, anything internet based like iplayer would be unusable and strangely pings would go through the roof too. Maybe its a sideffect of the way the STM works, I dunno...

EDIT it is deffo a throttle of 75%, or in the case of 2Mb, 50% it seems these days.

    Re: Terrible VM download speed

AFAIK, the way cable works your download speed is always throttled since the max download speed is much higher. I think for that reason you are more likely to get your full speed most of the time (unless the network is busy) than with ADSL.

75% throttle back on 2mb would be evil

    DITTO

Been with TW for a fair number of years and in that time my connection has "broke" maybe 8 times and resolved pretty quickly, usually through the help of Newsgroup support.

Yes STM is a pain if you insist on downloading when your likely to get caught out.

I suspect application throttling will take over from STM and it'll be torrents that'll be hit.

As for 50meg which I transferred to, well it only cost me an xtra tenner a month as I was on the VIP package, not too much to pay considering the speed increase.

which test? if it's a speedtest don't rely on just one. Try lots and if others work fine and one doesnt then it just means your connection to that one or two is bad.

    Speedtest
    Speed.io
    BBMax
    MyBroadbandSpeed
    ThinkBroadband

    and lastly

    Ubuntu

Ahh myspeed. I used to use that alot on Virgin. If it doesnt start it could mean your java isn't working. Have you tried it in another browser or even a different server?

Its amazing how unreliable speed tests are.

All of those gave me enormously different results.

    Weird..

    ThinkBroadband

    BBMax

All one after another and fairly consistent with Ubuntu from Kent downloading at 1500-1700kb/s, thats with others on the net.

Could it be your local exchange? I'm on O2 as well.

    Re: Terrible VM download speed

since i moved and got vm reinstalled my speeds seem to have been fine and more importantly stable (and that's with the wife using the wireless lappy), without the wild latency and speed issues i had at my last house. i would have like to keep o2 but bt became a real pain in the ass after i moved and tried to tell me that i'd need to fork out again for another new line - there wasn't one at my last house so had to pay the new line charge. more to the fact was that it was only 10 months since i had the last line in, and will be buggered if i'm gonna pay out for another one so soon.
