    Interference every 10 minutes

Recently helped set up broadband at a friends but according to the logs every 10 minutes exactly the connection drops. Also if someone is on the phone interference is heard for about 3 seconds.

There was no heard phone interference before the router was installed and when the router is removed it goes away.

Anybody else had such a pattern of interference ?

I take it you did install the filters.

Oh yes, also tried swapping them out with different filters.

Does it do this behaviour directly plugged into the master BT socket, if so remove the faceplate and try directly into the test socket as well, if it still happens and you have tried multiple filters even routers / modems if available? report the fault to their ISP as it is the only thing left.

    Problem does occur from master.

I have not tried another router yet. I intend to do so but if it is the router why the problem every 10 minutes. I saw one suggestion that it could be overheating but the timing is very exact.

Sounds like electrical interferance from something - may not even be in the same house but try isolating various things first before you go to expense of replacing the router unless you have a spare to hand.

    Re: Interference every 10 minutes

I've had a think about this, and the fact that the interference on the phone line only apperas when the router is connected does tend to point the finger at the router - possibly a software routine in the firmware that triggers every ten minutes, but the only way you are going to rule that out for certain is either by substitution or by trying that router on another ADSL line and see if the same thing happens then.

One other thought - is there a Sky box connected to the phone line? If so does it have a filter? Some of the Sky boxes did have problems with ADSL linesa, although I think the problem was fixed in later units.

But I think that I'd be trying that router on another known working line.

No Sky box. However I was suspecting the security system which is connected. Spoke to their tech guy and he swears that it could not cause this problem. They are going to check connection + filters on next inspection.

Well I was qoing to swap in an alternate router but be interesting to try that as well. Always hesitant to mess with config unless required.

Another possibility - is there a caller display on the line with a Call Minder "New messages" option. If so, this will check the dial tone at regular intervals to see if it has become intermmitent.

Don't think so but worth checking, thanks.

Have you tried it with all other devices disconnected from the phone line and only the router connected?

If the ADSL is on an alarm line it is probably that
If it is BT redcare then you need to get a special special filter for the line from memory, but once that is in place it should work find and dandy

Yes, with the exception of the security system, as that is inline.

It is not redcare but another company. I have previously contacted them and although they confess that no filter is installed they swear blind that nothing of theirs does this. I have requested they install filter anyway. It is still a possible culprit alothough my current money is on the router. Will be able to try alternate router in next few days.
