    OK Dumb Question

Never done or seen this, is it possible to have 2 DSL modems on the same phone wiring, using the same Internet provider? Would they be able to work simultaneously, or would one have to be off while the other is in use.

The house doesn't lend itself to a decent wireless signal, hence why I ask. I am aware the other alternative is some kind of PowerLine Ethernet solution. But exploring the first thing first!

    Re: OK Dumb Question

As far as I know you can only use one ADSL modem on a phonline. Not had any practical experience of this, nor have I ever known anyone who wanted to know, but based on my knowledge of ADSL I'd say no.

Then again, if you're using the same provider, I see no reason for it to not work, if you, or anyone you know, has a spare modem/router then give it a go. What's the worst that could happen?

hi i think i understand what you mean, and its pretty much what i wanted to do about a year ago
short answer is no you cant have 2 routers on the same line
how ever what you want to do would be solved if you used a couple of those plug connectors
and set up your 2º router to act as an access point
    so it would go
    ---telephone line--->Main router--->plug connector--->2º plug connector--->2ºrouter ) ) ) wifi laptop

    Re: OK Dumb Question

ADSL is design to be point-to-point and use the full available bandwidth the technology permits, so there's no means of sharing the wire.

I suspect that if two modems would hooked up, one would initialise, causing the other to lose sync and reconnect, leading to the former losing sync and reconnecting etc etc.

The logs at the DSLAM would be quite something to behold.

    Re: OK Dumb Question

Having tried this some years ago I can report it doesn't work and causes you to waste a weekend of your precious time at work and the loss of one BT Business Hub (they don't bounce).

Steve's theory is 100% correct, they don't get on well at all.

Were you thinking of using one on each of your phone sockets?

    Re: OK Dumb Question

Just on two plugs tops, as my mate doesn't want to run an Ethernet cable through his house, and the wireless connectivity through the devices on the 1st floor is a bit rubbish and inconsistent. I think PowerLine would be the better solution atm. Be good as I have never seen it in action. I know you are not going to get the full 200MBs but hey.

    Re: OK Dumb Question

You could always go for some kind of distributed wireless by using multiple compatible WAPs. Not cheap though

Simplest solution would be to site the first router near the master socket and run an ethernet cable out the wall and to the room directly above where you'd connect it to the second router (which is set up as a repeater/switch).

You'd need ~20m of cat5, two RJ45 plugs, a crimp tool and a f'off long masonry drill bit.

Chances are there are a few holes in the walls already (TV aerials, power cables etc) that you can use.

    Re: OK Dumb Question

why not have a wireless repeater half way between the wireless router and the laptop?

i had a terrible wireless signal between the bedroom the router was in, and the lounge downstairs....
shoved a cheap edimax repeater (£20ish?) just inside the door to the lounge.... the wireless connection works like a dream
    no cables needed....

    Re: OK Dumb Question

Not looked into repeaters, but will do so for a technical pov rather than this.

The room with the other PC is over the other side of the house, so running a cable isn't really that easy. Anyhoo, thanks for pointers.
