Those stats are fine, well within what they should be so it's not likely your connection to VM is the problem.

Re: Virgin Media have no clue!!

If it is the router then that is it. The reason I say that is because when I first had the router the speeds on my laptop were fine. My pc in my room on a wireless connection was also ok until, 2 months after getting the router the speed would not rise above 6mb. At this point the speeds on my laptop were fine an normal, and only now has there been a change.

And replacing the router will not be easy as my parents use it a lot, along with with my sister and myself. I don't think belkin will do a door step trade like some other companies do.

No it's not necessarily the router - you tried by connecting directly to the modem didn't you? It could be that the UBR you're on is over-subscribed or something.

Oh yeah I didn't notice that post. It does look like it has something to do with your router then, rebooting sometimes helps. Are you connecting to the router through a wired or wireless connection?

I have one laptop connected by wireless which I am on at the moment, and there is also the home pc which is wired to the router.

Re: Virgin Media have no clue!!

I have been experiencing that issue with speedtest.net lately too - regardless of server.

Im on VM 50 Meg. However on speedtest.net i see the speeds hit about 49Mb/s as it used too, then jump to 200-300+ lol.

No idea why. I still get 6MB/s from rapidshare so my line is fine, and im not complaining.

He then asks what speed test site I use ( I use thinkbroadband) but apparently VM only use speedtest.net and use the London server. Now I have found speedtest.net to be very inconsistent and so mainly use thinkbroadband. So i go to speedtest.net to do a speed check for him which showed i'm getting 32mb/s with an upload of 0.50 mb/s . Now i'm on the 10mb line so how the hell can those speeds be correct. His response was that I was on a 20meg line or it was unlimited- WTF!!!!

I then booted up the home pc and did the speedtest.net test on it which started on the needle at 3.5mb and then jumped to 25mb/s. He when went to speedguide site and downloaded this tcp optimiser and set some slide bar to the far end. But the same odd results came back (low start speed jumping to stupidly high figures)

Next thing he does is change the modem to a newer version. This does not fix the problem although according to him it has, and it must mean i'm on a high line speed than is on my bill.

On the home pc after the modem change:
Thinkbraodband gave me 6.6 Mbps with an upload of 0.3Mbps
Speedtest.net gave me 22.13Mb/s (although it started around 5.6 and then shot up) and an upload of 0.46Mb/s

On my laptop with wireless connection:
    Speedtest.net gave me -

    Thinkbroadband-

Now if somehow i am on some 20meg line then how a) do i get up to 32Mb/s and b) how is my upload still low???

Could someone shed some light on what is going on

first thing they should have done was check the up/down signal power levels to check the were with acceptable levels. if not then they could have fitted an attenuator to bring them in. signal power levels can move and when they do move out of acceptable range - it can and usually does degrade your service. if i do a speed test with kaspersky still on i get a speed of 80+meg untill i take it off and then i get a true(ish) reading of 19.5meg.

grasping at straws by the sounds of it. the line can do 10/20/50(and 200 if your one of the lucky ones on the trial) and is only restricted by what service you choose. and wtf has unlimited got to do with it - and never heard of an unlimited speed line, not to tar all the teks with the same brush - but some that have had to come out to mine haven't all seemed on this planet.

I agree, i've received a fair amount of nonsense from the supposed VM Technicians... have you tried the support newsgroups? When i found my way there (the broadband support newsgroup) thats when my problems actually started to be resolved. That's where the real techies lie.

Re: Virgin Media have no clue!!

Just noticed another problem...........my laptop wireless. Been watching tv and came back to the laptop to find I had no wan connection but did have a lan connection to the network. Now this half disconnection has happened for the last few days. It will lose wan and then reconnect a short time later. But just now when I tried to repair the connection something popped up saying: There may be a problem with your domain name server (DNS) configeration. Windows failed to find the well known "www.microsoft.com" using DNS. The server may be down.

......Just as i was writing this i got limited connectivity :| When I tried to repair it said an adapter on my device was not working properly. And wan connection has just gone again after I had re-connected. Also if i look for available networks i have to refresh a number of time to see my router. But this is inly happening on my laptop where as my sister's laptop is unaffected :| Having massive trouble trying to reconnect to my router

I do have a spare wireless adapter i could use- should I install that ?

Re: Virgin Media have no clue!!

Ok connected my spare wireless adapter i'll post some speed tests in a min. No idea why my laptop wireless suddenly went mad :|

Ok still same speed problems but the adapter is getting a better signal. I'm about ready to chuck my laptop and router out of the window. Oh and to top things off my adapter just lost connection for 2 seconds then reconnected. I think I have forgotten what a few months without issues is like

Malware or a virus could not cause this could it? Kaspersky 2009 which is up to date has not picked anything up. And last week when I was on one site I clicked to view the next page and it sent me back to the homepage entry. No idea if something odd happened there.

Right i'm off to bed maybe something will improve tomorrow- and the connection with the wireless adapter just went again. Thank for your helps guys please keep it coming !!

does rather sound as if your wireless adaptor is a bit dodgy mate, see it all the time tbh. The speeds when you were connected directly seemed pretty good.

Things i can check you lot cant - Traffic Management, a period of SNR on a particular line, Outages, previous diagnostic checks,

other than that its just troubleshooting

But how can the adapter built into my laptop and the spare usb wireless adapter I had for another pc both be faulty ??

So the router would not be causing my laptop internal adapter to frequently disconnect ? As I said my sisters laptop is fine.

Right back on belkin usb adapter now and in its connection settings I have full signal and it says speed is 1.0 Mbps . Now all these Mbps etc are confusing me so if it says 1.0 Mbps does that mean my line speed is 10mb?

Will can Toshiba a call now and hope I can have it repaired locally if it is still in warranty! Bought it last March.

Update: Just when I thought my laptop wireless card was dead it comes back to life when i'm talking to the Toshiba tech guy :| So very confused! Oh and I had to dl a install file for the wireless card, which was 45.1mb and with a speed of 850kB/sec on average.

Re: Virgin Media have no clue!!

1.0Mbps display in the wireless signal Window means 1 megabit. It sounds to me like it's your router, especially because of the limited connectivity issue - I've seen that plenty of times on failing routers. A process of elimination is about the best way to troubleshoot for things like this - change stuff at every stage and see when it gets better, you've tried more than one PC and more than one wireless card already and it's still been bad so do you have a spare router you could try or something?

Re: Virgin Media have no clue!!

No spare router and can't afford to buy another. But the issue with my laptop wireless was because of channel 13 which I had turned it to. The toshiba tech guys were a great help! Another odd thing I have noticed is that thinkbroadband gives accurate results on my wired pc, where as speedtest.net give correct results on my sister laptop (9.89mb). But on mine both are far off.

And I don't think belkin will allow a swap on the door step, which would leave me with no connection apart from the home pc (my parents pc)

Maybe i will wait and see if my laptop connection remains stable, otherwise i'll try and get a replacement from Comet.
