can we rename this thread to "Virgin Media have no clue what AledJ is doing with equipment they never supplied and he doesn't know how to configure!"
j/k
we got there in the end
Nice joke but i'm afraid something is still wrong
I have a Toshiba Laptop and on Wednesday it went loopy connecting then disconnecting, and then showing limited connectivity. So phoned Toshiba because I thought it might be the wireless card and so had a tech remotely connect to see what was wrong. He didn't find anything wrong but we did go into the router settings to see if that was the problem. Now the only thing I had changed was the channel number. So it was changed from 13 to 10 but still had problems later that day. So I changed it to channel 11 and up until last night it was working fine. Now it connecting but then disconnecting but staying LAN connected, and then reconnecting to the WAN.
The Toshiba tech thought it may be my router but if that is the case then why is my sister laptop not having any issues?
Just changed the channel again but I know the issue will come back at some point.
edit: Just done a virus scan which found nothing. I fear my only option will be to do a complete reinstall uggghhhh

In my router settings the WAN connection type is set to dynamic. Should it be switched to static ?? Not sure if VM uses static! Then again the issue is only only laptop so it most likely wont make a difference.
No, dynamic/DHCP is correct for VM.
Right still having some issues If I change the router channel all will be ok for 3 days, and then I will lose the WAN connection but still have LAN connection. I have run our of idea as to what the problem is. My sister laptop which I have had beside me, to check what happens when this disconnection happens is ok. So I can assume that my router is working ok seeing as my sisters laptop is fine???
I have downloaded the software for my wireless card and repaired that but no difference. There is no point in my un-installing the wireless card and then reinstalling it, as I don't think this is a software problem. Can someone confirm this to some extent?
If I did send this back for repair would they delete and re-install the whole system ? Can they not just put a new wireless card in??
I appreciate any help guys and understand that my problems seem stupid or unexplainable, but this is driving me nuts now.
edit: Could a Mod change the title to this thread to - Connection issues
So when you start getting problems you can still connect to the Internet fine on another laptop, correct? If that's the case then yeah it is most probably the network card on the computer you're having problems with, whether it's hardware of software I'm not sure but I have had similar problems with wireless adapters myself which I had to replace. It was a while ago now so I can't remember exactly what was happening but IIRC it was something like they were working fine one day then just wouldn't connect for some reason the next. Could you borrow a USB wireless adapter off someone to see if you can connect fine with that?
About returning the system for repair - they might wipe it, they might not but it would be wise to make a HDD image either way. However you maybe charged a no-fault-found fee if there isn't anything wrong with the card/if they can't find anything wrong with it on their test router for example so be sure it needs sending away before you do it. I'm sure we've all had some seemingly impossible to fix problems at some time!
This just gets more and more confusing
Ok so while using the wireless laptop card it disconnected from WAN and stayed connected to the LAN. First it said my network key was wrong but its not, and then this came up 'cannot communicate with Primary DNS server: (my router address here) '
So I connected my spare adapter and it connected first time but I decided to unplug and use the extended usb cable. But this time it would not let me connect etc etc Then I looked at the properties for the wireless card, and it said network type: Access point- now is that correct ?
Also I have 'Connect automatically when this network is in range' ticked, but 'connect to a more preferred network if available', and 'connect even if the network is not broadcasting'
'enable atheros connection settings is now ticked but not sure exactly what to change in the settings.
edit: and now for some reason (back using the wireless card) my wireless adapter does not show in 'manage network connections' Maybe I should just do a complete reinstall, but want to avoid that if it is the wireless card rgrgrggr
Really don't want to have to phone belkin and speak to someone in India who is reading from a screen. Toshiba are better but no idea if it is the router or my laptop. If my sisters laptop did the same then, at least I would have a direction to go in.
Sent back some belkin powerline adapters which would stay connect but then disconnect, then connect etc so not sure if that points to anything.....

Try entering your ISP's DNS servers in network settings, you can usually find the IPs in your router but for Virgin they are:
Primary: 194.168.4.100
Secondary: 194.168.8.100
No I mean enter them in your computer's network settings; by default the DHCP server on your router will (on most at least) assign itself as the computers DNS server so it relays DNS requests and in some cases this can cause problems. Open network and sharing center then select the connection you're using, click properties, select Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4) then click properties, click use the following DNS server addresses and enter those IPs.
At the moment the its set to 'obtain DNS server address automatically'. If I change this it will only affect my laptop and not the router or other computers/laptops ?? I'm sure that is a daft question but want to double check.
edit: just found this http://www.dynamode-drivers.com/inde...able&Itemid=53 and says the DNS should be :
Preferred DNS: 194.168.4.100
Alternate DNS: 194.168.8.10
Was yours a typo error?

It will only change settings for that computer.
Just had a look on the VM forum and found that the router should set the DNS automatically. So why is my sisters laptop ok but my laptop having funny turns
Also could ad-aware or spy ware be responsible? Not been to any dodgy sites, and I have checked for viruses and found none.
Found this on the VM forum but sadly they don't give any fix http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/...her/td-p/32976
Also is this correct- network type: Access point - That what it says if i go to 'manage wireless networks and then right click properties on my router name. Never noticed it before but should it not say router?

Looking in my router settings the 'use as access point' is disabled so why does the network type show it as a access point?
