    Losing internet, router problem?

Hi, looking through the forum this seems a bit of a basic problem compared to what you guys are posting but I really need help with my network. Have a cable broadband modem hooked up to a new linksys WRT54G2 router which gets connected to by a few devices. The games console connects by wire and a couple of laptops and an iPhone connect wirelessly.

Recently however everything on the network will lose connection to internet simultaneously, router strength still strong and reading the name well (no "unidentified") and no sign of ip conflicts (something which the iPhone caused at the start but a static ip address fixed that). Now my instinct was that this was the modem, so tried to unplug and plug in to restart the modem but upon doing that nothing worked. The only way to get the internet working again was to unplug the router, after which everyone reconnected with ease.

This is now happening 2-3 times a night and is infuriating, anyone offer any advice? I can of course provide more information.

Thanks for the help and enjoying browsing through the forums, may stick around a lurk a bit

How many wi-fi access points are there in your area? You might have better luck if you change the frequency.

Virtually none, one residential one which comes in and out due to the signal being so weak.

Some form of interference? Is it the same time each evening?

Can't see it being interference, keep it from electrical devices and connect wirelessly with a netbook in the same room. There's never any dip in connection to the router, just the net that goes which is remedied with the router getting restarted. Also the wired games console drops internet connection too.

    Nope, completely random times.

It would still be worth changing frequency, you might also try putting your router on a filter, as noise from the mains could be affecting it. Microwaves can sometimes cause problems as they user a broad frequency range.

Already slapped a filter on, will give the frequency change a go. Thanks

    Re: Losing internet, router problem?

I have a problem with my BT home hub where it occassionally dips and out of signal - its not too much of an issue unless I am on the internet phone making a call, then it crashes and the call ends.
