    Unhappy Wireless Internet Problem

Hi, I fairly recently got wireless internet for my PC, running Windows XP service pack 2 with a Belkin wireless g internal card and a NETGEAR wireless ADSL modem router (DG834G v2), at first my internet was fine running at 48Mb/s or 54Mb/s and excellent signal strength but then after maybe a week it started to deteriorate and the speed kept dropping and eventually disconnecting, after playing around with the settings in configure i managed to get it back to how it was at the start but again this problem occured, all the time though i have had excellent signal strength, however now the speed is general low, although not disconnecting that often but i cant access the internet even though it says im connected. I have downloaded the latest firmware and SSID is enabled. I am also using WPA-PSK to secure the connection.

    http :// aycu24 .webshots .com/ image/ 27423/ 2004799286613568063_rs . jpg

This is a screenshot of my IPConfig if it helps at all and IP routing is no longer enabled

    Thanks in advance

    Alex

    Re: Wireless Internet Problem

No wonder you can't connect to the internet, your Default Gateway is set to your own blooming IP!.. basically, you're trying to talk to the internet, via yourself instead of your router, leave DHCP to do it's job.

For future reference, please don't space out urls, ug.

Ah, an anti-spam measure, it's just a pain having to delete the spaces from the url to see the image. If you have any more problems feel free to pop back.

    Re: Wireless Internet Problem

Normally DHCP assigns everything automatically, so a simple ipconfig /renew often fixes silly problems with broken DHCP implementations such as the one used by your Netgear router.

The other option is to statically define your IP addressing details. To do this you'll need to open your wireless adaptor properties, and edit the IPv4 settings. There's a handy guide for that here:
    http://portforward.com/networking/static-xp.htm

You'll want to enter the following details:
IP - 192.168.0.10 (or some other arbitrary number in place of '10' between 2 and 254)
    Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway - 192.168.0.1
    Primary DNS - 192.168.0.1

There's lots of other guides on that site that can provide you with useful networking information if you're curious.

    Re: Wireless Internet Problem

Hey again sorry to say still no light at the end of the tunnel. At first it wouldn't let me renew my IP address but i worked around and now it has renewed it however the internet still won't load. Don't know if it helps at all but i've got a computer connected directly to the router that works fine its just the wireless that doesnt seem to work. I have managed to get DHCP to enable again though so any more advice would be greatly apprieciated.

    Re: Wireless Internet Problem

I'll need a traceroute for more information:
    In cmd type "traceroute www.google.co.uk"

That's without the ethernet cable connected of course.

Ah sorry, I was thinking of the UNIX traceroute command, it's actually "tracert" in windows.

    Re: Wireless Internet Problem

Ahh, so your problem is one of DNS resolution now, rather than gateway. Is your Primary DNS Server value still the same as that of your router?..

At this point I'd recommend statically defining the IP parameters on your wlan card, I had the same netgear router as yourself and the DHCP server program it used really was a pile of smelly doggy dodo.
