    Question Help me Hexus...

You may remember that I recently obtained approval for the second round of applications for superfast broadband in our little town.
    http://forums.hexus.net/networking-b...5-oh-yeah.html
I've been seeing a lot of pricing/service changes recently with Infinity and VM giving speed increases for free. This has the possibility of changing my pricing model. KCC is thinking of a cost to households of £90.00 signup fee and £30.00 per month. I think that this may be a serious overstatement.

I'd be very grateful if you would all post your packages here (not that one - It's a family forum), speed, data cap etc and how much you're paying

PM me if you're shy, and I can assure you that I am only after a snapshot of where the market is currently. I will not be using any names or identifiable information, it's all about the numbers.

    soooo...

Roughly £38 a month for evening and weekend calls, 120gb /month allowance. Speeds of 50Mbs.

I reckon those fees seem alright actually.

    Re: Help me Hexus...

Im with plusnet for calls and broadband. Line rental was all payed up front so i got a discount of a couple of quid per month and it worked out at £9.49.

Im on the 120GB monthly peaktime cap deal and it works out at £21.49 per month for 2Mb upload and 40Mb download. Installation was free.

    Re: Help me Hexus...

Phage - it is the connection fee that is going to put most people off - but if you've got a captive market, that may well not be the case.

Is this venture run on a non-profit or charitable nature, or is it profit orientated? The other thing is what does the connection fee cover, is it the modem & router? Is there an option to provide your own? etc...

£30/month isn't bad or is terrible, depending on the package offered?

FYI, I'm on a BeThere connection, unlimited 24mb for £22/month. (Interestingly though, BeThere now state their maximum speed as 16mb for new subscribers....)

meh the connection fee wouldn't put me off. Companies charge £50 for installing a phone line then £50 for configuring your fttc modem anyway.

    Re: Help me Hexus...

I have sky broadband unlimited (no data caps what so ever) doing a quick run on speedtest.net the results are
I usuallly get 10-11 mbps download speed and 1-1.2 mbps upload it depends on your phone line tho. Sky unlimited is up to 20mb
Just enter your phone line details and they will estimate the speed you can get:http://www.sky.com/quickbuy/build

the current offer for sky broadband is:
    Sky Broadband Unlimited
    with Talk Unlimited
    £7.50 a month for 12 months
    then just £15 a month
    Sky Line Rental payable

and you get Free and unlimited WiFi Hotspots from
The Cloud which is great if you'r out and about.

Indeed captive market. It will be us, or ADSL.
The business model, I'm sad to say, will likely be to get the funding, build the network and sell it as a going concern to one of the bigger Telcos. We had feelers from BT and Fujitsu so far. I simply don't have the training or time to run a telco, even a little one on a non-profit basis. I'd love to, but can't see that it would survive the big competition.
If you come to beers, I'll bore the arse off you at some length if you like !

I'm on wireless broadband, I doubt it helps, but it should be an available alternative (Orbital/Vfast), especially as you're a Kent too. Happy to post my stats (fnar!) if you're interested.

We pay around £35 a month for 50Mb from Virgin Media. That includes a Virgin phone line and our internet package.

The breakdown is around £20 for the internet and £15 for the phone line.

Traffic management is in place with all virgin internet connections now see:

I would be very interested, as a WiMax solution has been suggested for some of the more remote households.

£77.50 for 60Mb broadband, includes line rental, XL telly, Tivo, 2nd V+ box, phone package and Sky Sports though. The wife keeps talking about going to Sky, but they end up more expensive for the same as what we've got, plus they don't service our area on broadband, so that's £17.99 flat fee for really crummy speeds.

I'm up for that - be interesting to see what is involved.
