My primary concerns here is the infrastructure of the internet, which is already in a sorry state of afairs, we need to cut down on wastage and be more efficent.. I for one don't like having to use the apropiately dubbed 'intardnet'. Thats what matters to me.

You give more clueless idiots fatter pipelines on their completely insecure windows computers that gives script kiddies at least 8 times more bandwidth to wreak havoc on an already overloaded internet.. Its all a ballance, and at the end of the day when flooding occurs, its us that has to put up with the effects and aftermath.

Do you actually have anything to back up the notion that the internet is "in a sorry state of affairs" and "completely overloaded"?

The fact that bandwidth costs and latency times are coming down would suggest otherwise.

aidanjt, show some maturity and balance in your posts or you can post elsewhere. Your point of view comes across as petulant, you almost had some good arguments in your posts and then you ruin it by refusing to acknowledge that everyone has different requirements. To quote your own post "There's more the internet than you". Just because you can't see a use for high speed web doesn't mean the rest of us should be held back by a blinkered viewpoint.

If you want to talk about productivity.

I run Dual TFTs and have ADSL - I have outlook 2003 (with the funky 3 panel setup) I also have a fast PC - do I game? No - I have an X800 cos it is quiet.

At the end of the day do I need all of the above? Well yes - it would suck without it.

I also send 200+ emails a day to people and respond fast.

Oh and my DSL mirrors some website in the evenings....

    David, neat setup

I got a 9600XT.. and your right, they are loud as hell, but with a zalman block and a bit of elbow grease (and arctic silver grease) its whisper quiet and freezing.

Az, while I apreichate that everybody has different needs. I still know the majority don't acctually need whats being discusted here, and it is even potentially dangerous for us. Thats all I'm getting my nickers in a twist about.

Just think of the possibilities though. Imagine if you could get out of bed and login to WORK from home. Thousands of people could do this and then the strain of public transportation would be lessened. Teleworking at the moment is not really practical due to the "poor" speeds we have in relation to other countries that use fast connections like Sweden.

Also, rather than popping to the video shop to RENT a film it can be delivered via your shiney new ADSL2+ Line, cheaper and easier than driving to blockbuster and queuing only to get a shirty member of staff grunting and humming at your choice of film and the film you want can always be delivered by some digital DRM content so it times out after 2 days and deletes itself.

Another scenario is that doctors could see first-hand images etc and video links over large distances quicker and therefore help to save more lives as specialists in specific areas could help "assist" with operations.

Its not all doom and gloom with the internet you know and the advantages more than outweigh the disadvantages.

aidanjt: you still haven't apologised for effectively calling DaBeeeenster a pirate due to your complete lack of insight and inability to comprehend the need and uses for higher bandwidth services.

Wildmonkey.. yea that would be cool, now we just need to get the government to think about working from home more seriously (other than for parents).. I do like the possibilities that ADSL2+ opens up, It would be nice if folks took it with a pinch of caution and be more warey of the dangers it opens up also.

Stoo.. while I didn't mean it like that, and if he did take offence (Which I think he did :/) then I do deeply applogise to DaBeeeenster..

Lets face it - the end user will pay for it in the long run. But why not as there the people who are going to get the most out of it!

Heh - I don't need 1.5Mbps Cable but it sure is fun (however hosing a website at home that gets maxxed out by one user does really beg for BETTER UPSTREAM!!)

Oh tell me about it, the upstream thing is really limiting and irritating (however i think ISPs are happy with this since they would find it hard to justify the prices they chaged businesses/government departments the extorsionate rates they charge for leased lines), thats why im a bit of a fan of SDSL, hopefully we will see good improvement in this area.

I can easily max work's 10mbps line on my own (though I don't often have cause to), the number of webservers that can provide a 1MB/s feed is not small you know.

Im not bothered about 18mbps down, but I would quite like faster than 256 up....1mbps would be very nice actually.
