Wireless Internet sharing, w/out Router/AP

I have 2 pc's that i need to get setup so that the 2nd one can utilise the internet connection of the first.
I know that setting this up on a wired network is not a problem, as I've done it a couple of times before, but this time the 2 pc's are far enough away from each other (over 2 storey's) to make a wired connection impractical.

I therefore intend to go wireless, but don't have any intention of adding any other hardware to the wi-fi, and the computer with the internet is always on, so I don't need a router.

Can this be done simply with 2 wireless adapters, one in each machine, and using them to send the signal to each other without the need to go via a Router/Access Point?

Any help would be appreciated.

Yes it can. You need to make what we call an 'ad-hoc' system.
