From what i can see, ntl and by are merging, with ntl using the BY backbones to get more bandwidth to the ntl users. The ntl and by management are merging and shifting about and the caps should not be impossed as its the by service just with the ntl/by name.

they bloody better not cap us ! its almost pointless as with all the media content they tout we can download and the next gen consoles using alot of online features and wireless networking each home/familys internet usage is increasing every day as they get more family and more devices that access the web !

    meanwhile im lovin my 10mb

i downloaded service pack 2 from ms site and it steadied out at aroun 445KBs to 450BKs

could probably get more from a less busy site or whatever

The only reason why NTL imposed bandwith caps on their customers is that they investing in the wrong infrastructure (having massive debts hasn't help either). NTL didn't think about the design of their infrastructure and as a result, missed out the major need for traffic shaping (i.e. the ability to reduce the bandwith on a particular type of traffic - read p2p et al). So in an effort to preseve service they imposed caps, all because their nerowkr was probably over subscribed and conjested - this info was disclosed to me by an NTL employee and some hardware vendor at the InfoSec conference.

I'm not that delighted that the NTL exec will be taking post in the resulting merger company, but I'd like to hope that theis new company will remain competitive and manage their networks effectively. If caps are implemented, I won't be happy but on the other hand I don't think I use much anyway - I forget that I have migrated from 56k land.....

I was supposedly upgraded to 10mbit on friday (well my modem config says 10mbit at least) but I'm only getting speeds around 300-350k . I've done numerous tests and I can pretty much conclude it's not me, just BY technical support keep making me keep doing them before they'll actually do anything .

Well here's some relief on whether our services will change or not for the time being.

    try downloading this: ftp://blueyonder.tucows.com/mirrors/...6-binary-1.iso

and see what the download rate is..

Theoretical maximum is around 1200k/sec btw

Ah thanks for that, something actually off BY's FTP but still I'm only getting 350 odd kb/s max .

Hopefully this is enough with the other speed tests I've done to convince them to do something.

Sounds like you're stuck at roughly 3mbit speeds still?

Have you tried re-booting your cable modem? (turn it off for a couple of minutes, then back on again, it should then re-download it's settings from BY again..)

I know when I had a BY cable modem, they'd get stuck now and again, and you'd have to give them a poke before they'd wake up..

Yeah tried re-booting loads with the same result, even got a m8 to bring his laptops round to make sure it wasn't me (spyware or messed up ethernet card) and got the same speeds as before.

Phoned BY again today, making me do more tests with their engineers checking my modem from the other end and theyre adamant that nothing is wrong.

At least they said they would get a senior technician to ring me 2morrow to try and sort it out.

However I was able to get 500k off their gamefiles.blueyonder.co.uk page so that's something at least to be happy about.

Oh is that what it is, I'll try suggesting that to them if they're willing to listen to me.

I guess they gotta put up with dumb customers who might be doing simple mistakes.

Just annoyng that I feel like I'm being treated like a baby and they just can't my word that it isn't me doing anything wrong lol!

Anyway muchos thanks for the help .

Well, they've just upgraded a bunch of people to 10mbit, it wouldn't surprise me if they'd bandwidth throttled people until they'd made sure the network can cope with the increased loading..

Any chance you got the number because I don't ever recall finding any information about some advance tech support line on the BY homepage.

Although one of their tech support guys did say there's like 3 levels in their administration and said that a "senior technician" from the one above would ring me tomorrow.

Maybe he will be one of those advanced tech people, I can only hope hehe.

I tested my modem again and this time I used both ethernet cards (one is for my LAN) and got the same speeds as before around 300k-350k.

But strangely when I used my m8's laptop onboard LAN again I was getting speeds around 500k or more .

I checked this more than twice and I keep getting speeds of 500k to 600k max on his laptop.

I definitely there's no spyware/adware on my PC stifling my bandwidth because I'm using a meter to monitor my network traffic and I saw nothing out of the blue.

Also I ran netstat to check for active connections and there was no issue there.

So I find it incredibly odd how I keep getting 300k-350k on my PC and the laptop gets 500k-600k.

Anyhow both speeds still fall short of what I'm supposed to be getting .

That certainly is an odd one...

Have you checked to see if there are any newer drivers for your onboard lan? (iirc there was an issue a while ago with certain onboard lan ports using too much cpu time and killing the throughput)

Something else you could try is linking your mate's laptop to your pc via ethernet and doing some file transfers to and from your pc's to check throughput?
