Yeah the BY guy who phoned today asked me to try updating the ethernet drivers.

So I downloaded the latest nforce drivers for my nforce 2 chipset even that didn't help.

He also made me download a TCP/IP speed optimiser program off www.speedguide.net and try changing the speed settings from 3mbit to 10mbit on my ethernet card but it still didn't make a difference.

I'll try your last suggestion with the LAN and get back to you.

Again many thanks for your advice.

I was working for Telewest's IT department when they first started playing with Cable Modems about eight years ago. I was part of the Staff only trial (about 50 of us) and had a cable modem running at 10mb half-duplex for several months - this was when 33k modems were considered fast!

Best I could get was about 330kps downloading Windows 95 service packs from Microsoft. Very few other places had the bandwidth to support such speeds!

That may have been true way back then, but there are places out there which will quite happily max-out even a 100mbit connection

Ok I tried out those ethernet tests you recommended between my PC and the laptop and I was maxing out around 8 megs a sec so that looks good.

But I was thinking I should be getting a little more than 10 megs a sec.

The funny thing though is with my PC as the gateway, I was still able to get 500kb/s on the laptop.

So I checked my DU meter program which monitors my network traffic on my PC while I was downloading a file on my laptop.

The the meter on my PC showed I was downloading and uploadng at 500kb/s.

So I'm left thinking what the hell is going on, why can't I get 500kb/s on my PC.

Am I right in thinking it can't be adware/spyware stifling my bandwidth because wouldn't that have affected the download rate over the LAN?

Now my last resort is to try and find the usb cable for the modem instead of using the ethenet but I can't find the stupid thing probably because I carelessly misplaced it somewhere .

Or use my sis's new PC that arrived yesterday and see if I can get 500kb/s over that.

    Wish me luck!

    Edit:

Just tested the speeds this time with my PC again as the gateway connected to my sis's PC and tried downloading on that.

Even more surprising now I'm getting 600kb/s or more now on that PC.

The only conclusion I can come to is that there is no adware/spyware that I know of that would hog up so much bandwidth to would prevent me reaching my max speed if I were downloading something on my PC.

I reckon there's something fundamentally wrong with my PC so I'll probably be forced to format it which I'd rather not do .
