Make sure this is Started (startup type: Automatic).

What flavour of XP are the machines? Pro, Home or N?

Can the machines ping each other by name?
    "ping laptop" on psychy
    "ping psychy" on laptop

Check the contents of HOSTS and LMHOSTS (if present) in %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc (open them in Notepad, they are plain text) - do you have any references to either machine name?

    Computer Browser service is fine.

    All machines are XP Pro

I can ping psychy from laptop (even via ip add)
I Can't ping laptop from psychy (even via ip add)

Got it now about the Hosts/LMhosts part.

No references at all in either.

That would be a problem - running a firewall on the laptop?

Does the WAP dish out an IP address for the wired client as well as the wireless ones?
I've had problems getting wireless clients to access wired clients through some models of APs, even without address translation.

My Intel Pro/Wireless 2100 3B miniPCI adaptor keeps disconnecting after about 30 mins.

It works fine, signal is great etc but then suddenly connection drops. The radio switches off but can't be switched back on...unles i reboot, get connection for a short time and back to square one.

Using Wireless Zero Configuration services or Intel's PROSet thingy?
From what I read on Intel's website they recommend to use one or the other, not both or you can get conflicts.

If it works okay for a period of time and then becomes unresponsive then it's probably not a configuration issue, but a driver, firmware or hardware problem with the device itself I would guess.

You think it's a hardware eh?? That's not good....

Anyway to test without finding another lappy to shove it into??

Tricky, I would first try removing PROSet and using Wireless Zero Configuration to see if it behaves differently or has the same issue.

Unfortunately the Microsoft component stops at the supplicant level - the process of locating and associating with an AP is handled by the driver and the wireless NIC so it's difficult to troubleshoot beyond the basics.

uninstalled ProSet but still disconnected using Wireless Network Connection after a short period (i.e. 30mins+).

    Hope it's not hardware prob.

Just tested it....problem only occurs after the laptop goes on standby, hibernation etc.
The wifi card just loses connectivity and shut downs.......so is not powered up.

Ah, okay this is something more specific then - I would guess either the system itself is failing to power up the device when returning from hibernation/standby, or the device is failing to recognise the "wake up" message.

It could be the age of the laptop or a problem with its ACPI - maybe it is a known issue with that model of laptop, or specifically a combination of that laptop & wifi card.
Testing that card in another XP laptop, and/or another card in your laptop would help narrow down where the problem lies (but it may not be solvable).

Check if there are any firmware/BIOS updates for your laptop, and any knowledgebase on the manufacturer's site.

ahhh....the laptop is the barebones kits that quite a few people bought from Hexus from the bargains forum. The AOpen one.

    Was bought 3 weeks ago....all drivers/bios updated.

Gonna have to yank out the wifi card and test it somehow....
