    Buying domain names..

    Hi,

Can anyone recommend decent companies to buy domain names from? I've been looking at using Low Cost Names UK, and they seem alright...?

Also, is it still mandatory to register a postal address with a global (.com/.net) address, or can you opt out now? It kinda defeats the object of having an internationally accessible web address for anonymity, but it still be possible for anyone to pin you down through a whois search!

    Thanks in advance,
    S.

I've always used 123-Reg for buying domains

Check that their are no hidden costs associated with moving the domain name hosting away from them. I use netscan www.netscanuk.com - not the cheapest, but then generally you get what you pay for... (Or - if something looks too good to be true - it prabably is!)

There are companies that you can pay for to cover your whois address with something fake, I'm not sure which ones, how they do it, or how much they charge, even if its legal. But I have seen companies advertising it.

As for me, I use 1&1, they're ok, but I know a lot of people dislike them.

Thanks for your advice guys.. Done and dusted with 123-reg.
The management console is simple but does the job, and the DNS records and forwarding was very quick to propagate too.

    Sweet..

i read about 1&1 in Micromart or on their site this week or recently where someone had
tried to leave but there was no option to so instead of renewing just let it run out.

They 1&1 tried to automatically renew it but his credit card details were out of date, but
they had still renewed it themselves and were demanding the money.

Sound like at least one to steer clear of.

I've used UK2.net, but for .co.uk domains at least I'll only use 123-reg now, because they give you full control over the domains, allow you to set up web and mail forwarding, etc, without any surcharges.

    NameServer settings and web forwarding...

Okay, so now I've got the domain, is there any way to point it directly at my free webspace that Demon give me, [i]other[i/] than using the web forwarding feature of 123.reg? All the 'web forwarding' does is stick a HTML wrapper around the 'real' pages and messes up direct file links etc. Am I missing something? Do I need to point to Demon nameservers rather than 123-reg's ones?

A little confused - never had to do this myself before..

    Thanks in advance,
    S.

Do you have full DNS control with 123.reg? If so could you not just setup an A record pointing to you Demon webspace?

That said, Demon used to be pretty good at handling that kind of thing themselves. See if they'll transfer the domain in and sort it out for you

EDIT - there's a pretty good page of info on their site at http://www.123-reg.co.uk/support/trouble.pl?id=48 - set your domain up in that manner and all should be well. If you get stuck drop me a message and I'll see what I can do
