I leaving Plusnet....not sure who to go to though. I have raised a ticket with plusnet, to some it up i told them that they should review their usage policy as people are leaving. With the digital era on it's way, (iTunes, movie downloads Media Centre software) i just think Plusnet should review their policy before it's too late. I won't be sending any more customers in Plusnet's direction! i have a feeling Vista media Centre will out sell most of their Vista range!!!

    anyway....

    Nildram

£25.99, 50GB peak time usage and an extra £3.50 for static IP. Not sure about the contention ratio.

    Zen

£34.99 Unlimited downloads, static ip included but the centention ratio is 50:1!!! Bit high if you ask me.

Good thing about Nildram is, if you use say 30gb in a month the next month rolls over the 20gb spare. So in affect 70GB! You can only roll over from the previous month.

That's the BT standard exchange contention for home products, Zen guarantee zero contention on their side of the network (they have no control over bt's exchanges!).

I was with Eclipse before plus.net.

They were ok-ish. Customer support was pretty poor. Speeds varied depending on the time of day, dropped a lot in the evenings.

Zen are a good choice - but so expensive. Guess you get what you pay for.

    Dear Mr Mark Devlin,

Your peak-time P2P, FTP and Usenet usage has exceeded the second level of
the Broadband Premier usage policy. To find out more about the published
    usage limits please go to
    http://www.force9.net/support/broadb...nagement.shtml

Level 2 management has been applied to your service during peak hours for
P2P, FTP and Usenet. All other protocols are not affected by this change to
    your service.

Your Broadband service will continue to be managed until your next billing
date at which time peak-time usage management will be removed. If your peak
usage continues to increase further peak-time usage management levels may
    be applied to your service.

Please reduce your usage and schedule large downloads outside the hours of
    8am to midnight.

    Thank you for your cooperation.

    Kind Regards,

    Ouch!

here is what i've sent to plusnet today!

Just to clarify that I have NOT received an email from Plusnet regarding my Broadband usage.

However I am concerned that Plusnet are loosing customers and might possible loose my custom if the usage policy is not changed. Currently I am far from being issued a level 1 warning but however, I will be upgrading to 8mb when available in my area. With Microsoft Vista Media Centre coming out this year, I’m sure I will download a lot more video and music for my media centre.

I currently work in the I.T industry and I can understand that you want to make everyone’s experience of the Internet enjoyable, by having a fast and reliable service.

When I joined Plusnet there was no restrictions on downloading and I was ranging between 40gb and 80gb per month. Now thankfully that was when there were no restrictions.

With the new digital era approaching and that relying heavily on the internet, I would advise that Plusnet readdress their usage policy as this is going to restrict a lot of Plusnet customers. I could provide several links to Forums (not just Plusnet’s) with regards to unhappy people on this issue. Many of these people have stated that they will be leaving Plusnet.

I have recommended a lot of customers to Plusnet, but until this issue has been resolved I will advise they connect with Zen Internet, who have no limitations to their service.

I would be grateful if you could inform me of any changes that might take place soon with the usage policy.

    Thank you for your time,

I have been with Zen for about 4 years, never had a problems with the 50:1 contention ratio, yes they are a bit more pricey than others but I have had about 2 hours downtime in 4 years!

    ALSO

Plusnet started messing with certain ports on their network, I have a friend who is on the premier package and had pings of 180+ when trying to play Battlefield 2.

Here is Plusnet's reply to my ticket...

The following comment was added to the ticket
    Dear Mr ...,
We are continually evaluating our policies in relation and reaction to customer experiences, the allowances on 4 and 8mb are larger than for upto 2mb, but as these products are new, the more people go onto them and the more data we have to evaluate by, we can then set an average accordingly. We have traffic management in place as for the majority of people, the Sustainable Usage Policy and traffic management would not be restrictive to them. The top few percent are actually using the majority of bandwidth across the platform and causing detrimental effect. We have posted some statistics to our usergroup ( http://usergroup.plus.net ) for people to evaluate and as seen, the majority of people are using their accounts in a sustainable way, we just don't want the minority to negatively impact on the rest.

We have generous usage allowances for our pricing points in the marketplace. ADSL is a contended service, we remain competative by our customers understanding of this.

    Regards,

    Andrew Etheridge
