6 months part is BS, but i have seen them go bad when mounted well out the way, put it down to a small surge in each case though, as there only £3 customers didnt mind stumping up on the warranty call outs
could well have been knocked though.

Got to be cobblers. Just fobbing you off. These are long life passive filters and will work for many many years. A power surge may kill them, but unless you are very unlucky, they will not simply fall off the perch after 6 months!
Try to make each and every day the best it can be.
I just had exactly the same discussion with TALK-TALK technical support, claiming my ongoing long term intermittent network connectivity was down to ADSL filter (which they claim only last between 8-12 months and need replacing).
I asked, as a qualified electronic engineer what parts of the filter have such a lifetime and why do they not inform this at the start of the 24 month contract.
I told them I will change the filter at my cost (and the major effort of moving the bookcase that the filter is behind). If this does not fix the connectivity problem I will cancel the contract and charge Talk Talk for all costs associated with me carrying out their brainless mindless requests.
So again TALK TALK supply filters for 24 month contracts which they claim will only last 8-12 months.
Guess im looking for a new ISP in a few weeks !
I was having intermittent connection issues for a while. called up Plusnet, who checked the line out, found a problem. they then sent a BT engineer out who found a connection problem in the cabinet.
engineers had been doing upgrade/repair/fiddling about work with other connections and our one had been damaged. they repaired it and all was well.... until another engineer broke it again. out went plusnet again and it turns out our cable is very fragile aluminium at the cabinet end and copper where it enters the house. no-one has any idea why. we remember it was all copper when they put it in.
the moral of this story is call up your ISP and find out if anyones been doing any work at the cabinet, something could have come loose on your cable which would cause your intermittentness. line checks might not detect it.
EDIT:
AAAAERGGHH just nioticed its a thread necro.. but my advice stands anyway i blame it being half one in the morning
