Router & Aol quick Qs Ps!

Hi i have a Aol account thats connected without the software via a (local area connection)Ethernet cable. Now as ive just built a new PC do i have to do anyting else other than putting my aol name/password into a newly setup connection? Or rather the routers settings/rules file (cfg) does that need to be put anywhere on new PC or are those settings already set intp the Router already? Sorry if it sounds stupid but i'd rather find out than make the mistake! Cheers n Advance

    are you using adsl?

if it is a router/modem and you have set the router to connect to aol(no software) then your new pc should literally plug and play(as long as the lan is setup correctly).

never dealt with using a pc as a firewall.

normally you setup your username/pass for aol on the router so any pc connected to the router will use its internet settings never heard of it being done another way apart from using an external modem.

a wired lan tends to work automatically unless you have a modem installed and have set the net connection to the one on the modem.

also your router should have a firewall.

what router model are you using?

    Hi,
You don't need a smoothwall firewall, your Netgear router will do all that for you. You shouldn't need to do anything, just plug in your new PC (to the DG834) and go.

Thanks guys sorry for the late reply! Yes i did not need the Aol name or password once connected. I usually connect via tcp/ip on ethernet connection, but now i have a pppoe Gateway connection (or simular) is this any different security wise? And also in the connections properties there are 4 different settings that are ticked: tcp/ip / QOS packet schedular / client for ms / file & printer for MS networks. What are these for ps and do i need all these installed? Thanks
