    Recomendations: NTL cablemodem/router

A friend's with NTL & now wants more than one pc linked to the net. So recomendations for a cablemodem/router, 4port min, wired(insistant on no wireless), pref with firewall but not essential.

    Recomendations & experiences please...

Somthing like the WRT54 series is a good bet.
Grab the cheapest you can find, as im guessing he wont be installing linux on it.
Was one in the FS forum offered to me for 30 quid the other day - a good buy.

I've got a £40 (out of Maplin, so cheaper online no doubt) Linksys BEFSR41 router. Works grand with the 10mb connection and ethernet to my pc and a switch with the Xbox, PS2, and another PC coming off that.

I would recommend draytek www.draytek.co.uk full of usefull features and superstable. For cable I think you need the 2900.

WRT54G here, if he doesnt want the wireless side of it just switch it off, better to have it and not use it than not have it and need it later.

While everyone here LOVES Drayteks, they would just be an overkill for this situation
Too much money for such a simple job.

He will still need the cable modem they supplied for reasons I won't bother going into it's not liek ADSL, you HAVE to use the supplied modem as it's MAC is registered on your account, use an unregistered modem and it won't work without you doing things you are not legally permitted to do.

Go for the WRT54GL, he may not want to install linux on it yet but for the extra fiver it's worth having the option of QOS and a thriving firmware community. Also the WRT54G's can be had cheaply from morgan as refurbs (32mb version 1.1's) again worht every penny so far.
