Baby proofing

Well Emma is now getting to the stage that she will soon very mobile. To that end we have had to start to think about baby proofing certain parts of the house.

The main thing we have in mind at the moment is the hifi, it is a very expensive separates setup with floorstand speakers.

Has anyone else managed to baby proof theirs? If so how.

Currently I am thinking that it maybe best to sell it, that way it won't get damaged and will go to a good home. If it got damaged it would be worthless to use as well as to sell, so the thinking is to do without for a few years, save up and then get something when we can control (within reason) the movement of little hands!

Replace speakers with smaller wall mountable units and get a wall mountable hi-fi rack or get a cupboard would be the way I went (will go). Floor mounted speakers are just asking for there cones to be pushed in, particularly when they are moving.

That would rather ruin the sound quality of an expensive separates system. Most owners don't even like the cloth/net covers on the front of the speakers, and take them off.

I have kind of thought of that, I have another smaller separates system with some Mission bookshelf speakers (or I can use the Kef Cresta 1's that are currently the living room rear speakers).

I am more wondering whether people thought that the system 'might' survive as is, (it will be very hard to see it go) or whether it really should go whilst it is worth something.

If they were behind something then you wouldn't be able to hear them? Also if they had something in front of them we would start to run out of floor space!

Perspex sheild? Bloke I used to work with made a big one to wrap around his DVDplayer/Sky box etc.
Small rail aroud the bottom edge (attached to whatever it rests on) would stop it being slid off, could use kitchen cabinet handles on their sides?

Just what I need at the moment as Hayden seems to be drawn to anything that is black with blue LEDS and thinks it's funny to press buttons and switch channels over. The thing is she's a right bugger for it as she shows you her puppy-dog eyes as soon as you go near her while she's doing this so you cannot tell her off for doing it.

You should also see her try and use my keyboard when she's sat on my knee looking at her pictures on the PC, she's a right little keyboard warrior

99flake, can you not rig up some wooden frame with chicken wire in it across the gaps and then place this around the speakers at all as this phase is only a small one they go through and I bet you'd rather keep the speakers then flog them.

Yeah I have thought that, part of me fancies the idea of an excuse to upgrade at a later date though

Also the other half doesn't like the idea of ugly home made things, I suggested a guard of some sort, didn't go down well!

Rob B -The perspex idea is good for the hifi rack mind, wouldn't work for the speakers though, don't want to have to screw into them or anything.

Some sort of mesh/wire shield? Or just tell her "no" when she goes near it. Works well enough for my little niece who loves to mess with my setup(s).

We are teaching her 'no' at the moment. The problem is the one time that she does it without us noticing, only takes one little finger to poke a hole.

Even worse is she could try and topple them over, that would be so dangerous.
