So what happened after 10minutes it crashed or you turned it off ??
What settings were you using in bios, did you lload bios default??
Why use yellow saockets when every man & his dog says black.
When you say 2nd socket is that closest to or furthest from the cpu.

Still sounds like duff RAM to me.
    or something

Re: C2D Overclocking Guide For Beginners P5K Add-On

im using default setting in bios with bios 0123. i got black screen after system turn off and turn back on after 10 minutes. i put 1 stick ram in first black slot, the one close to cpu, it boot up with good, no black screen or overclock failed. but i had black screen with same 1 stick ram on same black slot.

there must be problem with all the yellow slots.

again, i turned it off and waited 10 minutes, tried to turn on, black screen again, i tried other stick ram in same black slot, same result . mean it's not duff ram, both stick couldn't be bad at same time.

    Great guide - many thanks

Read all 500 posts this afternoon.

Got home and very quicly got my e2180 from 2.00GHz to 3.00GHz.

Just had to order a Scythe Infinity and some Artic Silver 5 before I go any further (on standard cooler).

    Many thanks again.

Try manually setting the voltage to something lower, suck as 1.4v (or whatever it needs) instead of AUTO...you might find that your temps are lower.

Re: C2D Overclocking Guide For Beginners P5K Add-On

How come after changing the FSB to 380 and setting my RAM to 5-5-5-12 CPU-Z still shows it at 380? I had it at 388 and even 400 but the RAM just ain't changing

I got 2 sets of 2 GB each OCZ gold pc2-6400

Can you show me a bios shot of your FSB at 400 and the RAM at 380?

Re: C2D Overclocking Guide For Beginners P5K Add-On

    Great guides Clunk

Been a bit unsure on o/c but thought might aswell

get my e6600 quickly to 3Ghz on AC pro and as5, core temp reports idle temps 23-25 (TAT records a few degress higher) which i think is quite cool. When i run Orthos in the first 2 mins the temps are like 62 and rising which is not good.
Voltage is set on Auto, CTemp showing 1.35v and CPUZ showing 1.425.
The real question is do i have to re-seat my cooler as i have done it wrong?
First time i have replaced a cooler

Re: C2D Overclocking Guide For Beginners P5K Add-On

Your temps are probably about right , using an AC cooler and also leaving vcore on auto.
The Auto setting is fairly conservative, in that it gives probably more voltage than needed.

Go into Bios & check what vcore tells you in there. Then set the vdimm in bios to the nearest setting to thhe value shown less 1 (you might try 2 if you want) , test stability with orthos, you should see your temps a degree or so cooler.

Other alternative is to get a more powerful cooler if you want to go further.

    luck

Thumbs up Re: C2D Overclocking Guide For Beginners P5K Add-On

I just thought I'd add my bit

Thanks to the OP for an excellent guide.

With a bit of fiddling I now have totally stable (so far!) system with my Q6600 running at 3.42GHz and my Corsair XMS2 PC6400 RAM running at 912Mhz (5:6 divider, 380MHz FSB).

Using Core Temp 0.95.4 peak core temps are around 61C but seem to hover around 57C most of the time and idle temps are around 35C. I could probably take it a bit further but I'm very happy with the performance as it stands.

It probably helps that the Antec 900 is less a case and more a collection of large fans!

Re: C2D Overclocking Guide For Beginners P5K Add-On

back again people with same problems with new gear

this time around with the new 700w power supply, antec 900 case, p5k-deluxe/wifi, go stepping Q6600...
my dilemma is overclock @ 3ghz ran perfectly for 8hrs with 4x sp2004 with no drama's.. temps on everest home, coretemp 0.95.4 were 51-49degrees and speedfan measuring volts.. until last 10 minutes of the 8hrs i installed asus probe II to double check my voltage.. opened APII and apprenetly my motherboard temps went from a stable 8hrs 27-28deg to 187degrees... when this happend my system temps went to -65degrees and the random AUX temp reading went from 127 to -65degrees???? in speedfan 4.32 and in everest they completely disapeared???? this only happend "after" i installed asusprobe??

next part of my problem.. now on stock bios settings i keep getting voltage drop on +3.3V goes all the way down to 0.02V... whats going on?? i must have dodgy copy of asus probe II??
please any advice would be fantastic...

Re: C2D Overclocking Guide For Beginners P5K Add-On

Some useful feedback on this board.......having just had to swap one (fortunately under warranty)...

I updated the BIOS using the Windows update option and it screwed the BIOS boot section......would not even recover using the crash recover option at boot up, just simply dead.

The learning is two fold - NEVER update BIOS from Windows, Use the DOS option, or if your board supports it update via BIOS (as this board could, silly of me not to use this!) Its safer - Trust me..

Second - Always get a board that has a pluggable BIOS chip, I had a P5K Deluxe with a soldered BIOS chip, so couldn't even spend $25 on a replacement!! (Lucky mine got swapped under warranty! and swapped for an SLI...heh heh...)
